UploadVR’s hands-on ahead of tomorrow’s Quest launch says Spectral Games’ co-op tower defense feels better as a whole than any one system does alone. $19.99 on September 10.
UploadVR published impressions of The Lightkeepers today, one day before the Meta Quest 3 / Quest 3S launch. Spectral Games (Medieval Dynasty: New Settlement) ships the Lovecraftian co-op survival tower defense on September 10, 2026 for $19.99, matching the date and price locked at the summer VR Games Showcase and covered earlier in our launch note.

The loop UploadVR actually liked
Mike Johnson’s write-up frames the day/night contract cleanly. By day you and friends scavenge the island around the lighthouse, with an optional boat run to a second island for more resources. A watch on the left wrist tracks daylight; a tone with a few minutes left is the last warning before nightfall. At night you fortify and defend the lighthouse against Lovecraft-inspired waves. UploadVR compares the rhythm to Bootstrap Island’s explore-by-day / survive-by-night and Drop Dead: The Cabin’s zombie-wave structure, then makes the sharper claim: the combination works better than the quality of the individual pieces would predict.
Inventory is the early tax. What you grab depends on which shoulder you reach for and which hand you use—right hand pulls the gun from the left shoulder and melee from the right; left hand pulls the backpack and a lamp. Johnson and James Tocchio needed a full first run just to learn crafting, the base island, and that shoulder map before they even reached the second island.
Where the seams show
UploadVR is blunt on fidelity and feel. Visuals are “not great” next to Bootstrap Island. Guns are serviceable but basic. Looting is Saints & Sinners–style category grabs with a narrower item set. Combat feels floaty and wants stronger haptics and impact audio. None of that sinks the session, Johnson argues, because the daylight clock does not give you time to dwell on it.
Comfort notes matter for new headset owners: seated or standing, smooth and snap turning, some climbing, and an optional lighthouse zipline. Constant motion may trouble newcomers. The boat’s overhead driver view was jarring at first and then irrelevant to the overall grade.
Grind, unlocks, and microtransactions
Plan on a long-term grind if the opening hours stick. Runs have multiple difficulties and lengths. The starter single-shot pistol is rough by design. Unlockable weapons, gear, and cosmetics come from in-game kill stats, run currency, and paid microtransactions—UploadVR groups that model with recent Knights of Fiona and After the Fall. If the first contracts click, there is a lot of runway. If you only play high-fidelity shooters or physics-heavy combat, this may not be your $19.99.
Hardware gate is unchanged from the Games Press reveal: Quest 3 and Quest 3S. The Meta Quest Store listing is live for launch day. UploadVR’s take is not a review score; it is a clear signal that the systems glue holds even when no single system is the star.
