Snap staged an L.A. LAUNCH EVENT today for its consumer AR glasses — and the headline was not another waveguide chart. According to AR Insider’s Mike Boland, who attended the hands-on, the big reveal was SPECS INTELLIGENCE: an anticipatory AI framework for faceworn ambient computing. Retail SHIPPING remains Fall 2026; what landed September 17 is the software story and a public demo calendar.

Specs Intelligence: Anticipatory Agents, Not Just Chat
Boland reports Specs Intelligence as a FRAMEWORK that enables smart agents for ambient computing — Snap’s phrasing is an “ANTICIPATORY AI service” that PROACTIVELY guides tasks. Examples called out at the event: IDENTIFY objects, ROUTE to destinations, ALERT about an upcoming flight, and other functions tied to connected apps. Evan Spiegel framed the moments as “INTUITIVE COMPUTING.”
Snap’s own SPECS Intelligence brief adds that the service builds understanding of goals, priorities, relationships, and routines from apps users choose to connect, then SURFACES relevant information without waiting for a prompt. Corners and Goals organize life areas and longer-term targets. Critically, Specs Intelligence also runs on macOS and iOS without owning Specs — a deliberate way to WHET appetite before glasses ship.
TechRadar’s Cesar Cadenas, hands-on at Snap HQ in Santa Monica, found the assistant keeps LISTENING until told to stop, builds routine understanding, and needs users to SPEAK UP for the mics. He called Specs Intelligence one of the strongest parts of the demo.

Hardware Hands-On: 51° FoV, Two Sizes, Still Preorder-Only
These are the sixth-generation Spectacles, REBRANDED Snap Specs, with a clearer CONSUMER push since AWE in June. TechRadar lists two sizes: 47 mm / 132 g and 52 mm / 136 g, Swiss TR90 polymer — heavier than Meta Ray-Ban (~50 g). Cadenas found the 52 mm COMFORTABLE; the 47 mm PINCHED temples. Display: 51° FoV, LCoS lenses; Snap equates the floating work panel to a ~24-inch DESKTOP MONITOR.
Boland stresses the rare combo: optical see-through (OST), fully immersive world-interactive AR, STANDALONE — no tether, no compute puck. That positioning still separates Specs from camera glasses and tethered headsets.
Pre-order remains $2,195 with a $200 DEPOSIT. Consumer RELEASE is Fall 2026 (before end of November); exact date TBD. Do not read today’s L.A. event as general RETAIL availability — glasses are not in open store sale yet.
Lenses, Browser, Translation, Connected Play
Use cases Snap cultivated span ENTERTAINMENT, education, work, shopping, TRANSLATION, navigation, fitness, and shared experiences. Boland’s notes on the SPECS browser: YouTube and HBO Max on a virtual display that feels like a ~115-inch CINEMA screen ~10 ft away, with partnerships including HBO and the NBA. Connected Lenses add SPATIAL ANCHORING for synced shared experiences — Dominoes with Jimmy Butler, Chess, Table Tennis. Snapchat stays native: snap fingers for a Snap; hands-free video call and share-what-you-see.

Productivity: Bluetooth phone PAIRING for calls and notifications, PC display expand, WHITEBOARD. Translation offers real-time subtitles across 60 LANGUAGES — Boland tried it and says it works; TechRadar demoed Italian. Navigation lens plus Tripadvisor for SPECS; Shopify enables full-scale 3D PRODUCT placement. Spotify via stem speakers showed LOW leakage in TechRadar’s session; Google Docs with a Bluetooth keyboard worked with noticeable LATENCY, and no mouse support yet.
Enterprise partners (Salesforce, AWS, NVIDIA, Trifork, Hololight) remain part of the pitch; we covered that stack separately — today’s story is the LAUNCH-DAY AI and try-on calendar.
Century City First Look Starts October 1
Public DEMOS begin October 1 at Westfield Century City in Los Angeles — Snap’s Specs First Look pop-up. TechRadar notes that timing makes an OCTOBER retail window plausible, but Snap has not locked an exact ship day. Boland quotes the classic AR sales problem: selling glasses online is like “selling TVs on the radio.” A YouTube recording of the launch event is live at youtu.be/_RHEDU7neds.
Bottom line for Metaverse Watcher readers: September 17 was a SOFTWARE and EXPERIENCE launch in L.A., not a storewide hardware drop. Specs Intelligence is the DIFFERENTIATOR to watch — especially the phone/Mac preview that lets buyers SAMPLE anticipatory AI before the $2,195 frames arrive this Fall.
