Prescription LENS INSERTS for Valve’s STEAM FRAME now sit in a narrow $59 to $69.99 band across three outside vendors, and Valve itself sells NONE of them. That is the market check Mixed News filed on September 23, almost a week after the headset’s reservation window opened.
The only pair Valve lists as Steam Frame Compatible — Zenni Optical’s $67.95 single-vision INSERTS — still could NOT be ordered when Mixed News checked on September 22. The product page asked for an email, not a prescription. AMVR, by contrast, says SHIPPING for its $69.99 NL2 inserts begins September 23.
Zenni Set the Price. Orders Did Not Open.
Zenni announced the inserts and the $67.95 U.S. PRICE on September 14 in a PR Newswire release, calling itself an AUTHORIZED Valve Steam Frame Compatible Prescription Lens Provider and saying the product “launches September 14.” The release promised single-vision LENSES in 1.67 high-index material, an oil-resistant coating, a carrying case, and a cleaning cloth, with NO pupillary-distance measurement required.
As of September 22, Mixed News found the U.S. page still headed “Coming Soon,” with a notify-me button instead of CHECKOUT. Zenni says every pair is made and shipped from its Ohio factory, with rush shipping offered on top of the base price.
Valve’s Compatibility Mark Covers Zenni — and Almost Nobody Else
Valve’s own Steam Frame page carries a Steam Frame Compatible accessories block. Products with that MARK, Valve says, “have been tested to work with Steam Frame.” Mixed News reports Valve names TWO: Zenni’s prescription INSERTS and the $149 Arcturus Vision PASSTHROUGH camera. Valve’s own link for the Zenni entry still landed on the same sign-up page.
Other sellers describe their inserts as built for the Steam Frame — a claim about FIT, not Valve’s mark.
AMVR Ships September 23. VR-Rock Is Sold Out.
AMVR’s NL2 inserts cost $69.99, the HIGHEST of the three priced options Mixed News logged. The company says SHIPPING is expected to begin on September 23, in the order paid orders arrive, because each pair is customized and TESTED on the device. AMVR lists a 1.60 index prescription version, quotes 95.6% light TRANSMISSION, or up to 98% blue-light BLOCKING on the filtered version, and says the lenses are 3D printed to shape and attach DIRECTLY to the headset’s display. Its store page confirms gradual fulfillment “in the order they were received and paid for.”
VR-Rock is the CHEAPEST at $59.00, and its listing has been showing as SOLD OUT. Mixed News says the company accepts short-sighted, long-sighted, and astigmatic prescriptions through SPH, CYL, and axis entry, claims the lenses work with the headset’s EYE TRACKING, and quotes a production time of one to three days.
Every PRICE Mixed News cited is a U.S. figure on a U.S. page, checked September 22. None of the sellers had published a UK or European price for the Steam Frame version.
VR Optician Has No Published Price
A fourth name is VR Optician, the German firm whose prescription INSERTS for earlier headsets have been on sale for years. Its Steam Frame page, Mixed News reports, will accept ORDERS at the end of next week and start SHIPPING in two weeks, with NO price attached and an email list in place of checkout.
What This Means for Frame Buyers
Valve has kept its own accessory business narrow. Mixed News notes it offers extras such as a $29 power supply at checkout, but prescription LENSES are NOT among them. The whole $59–$69.99 RANGE therefore sits with outside companies — and the only pair Valve has TESTED is not yet on the MARKET.
For glasses-wearing Steam Frame owners, that leaves a practical CHOICE TODAY: wait for Zenni’s AUTHORIZED inserts to open, take AMVR’s higher-priced NL2 now that SHIPPING has started, watch VR-Rock for RESTOCKS at $59, or hold for VR Optician’s European option once a PRICE appears. None of those paths comes from Valve’s own CART.
