Tech-Insider framed the MATCHUP on September 26: Valve’s Steam Frame is already SHIPPING from $1,059, while Meta’s VR Glasses sit at $1,299.99 with a Spring 2027 window. Same PRICE band. Opposite design BETS. One you can BUY this week through Valve’s reservation lottery; the other is still a Connect slide deck with a PUCK.

What You Can Buy Today
Valve LOCKED Steam Frame pricing on SEPTEMBER 14: $1,059 for the 256GB kit and $1,299 for 1TB, per Valve’s store page and VR.org’s launch tracker. Controllers and Half-Life: Alyx SHIP in the kit. The power supply is sold SEPARATELY. Distribution still runs through a shuffled reservation list with 72-hour purchase windows, so “shipping” does not mean walk-in retail stock — it means real UNITS are leaving Valve’s pipeline NOW.

Spec sheet that matters for buyers: 2160×2160 LCD per eye, 72–144Hz (144Hz labeled experimental), wireless PC streaming plus standalone SteamOS PLAY. Weight lands around 185G for the visor and about 440G total with battery and strap — a conventional all-in-one silhouette, not GLASSES.
What Meta Still Has Not Shipped
Meta’s newsroom (September 23, updated September 24) prices Meta VR Glasses at $1,299.99 for Spring 2027. The glasses weigh “about 100 grams.” Meta’s “five times lighter than Quest 3” line compares that face weight to a ~515g Quest 3 and leaves the puck out of the arithmetic — a GAP Digital Citizen called out on September 26. Outside reporting puts the puck near 300G; Meta has NOT published an official puck mass on its own pages.

Compute sits in the puck on an optical TETHER: Qualcomm Snapdragon Reality Elite (also called XR2 Gen 3 on Meta’s developer pages), up to three hours of high-resolution media playback, 45W fast charge. Controllers are NOT in the box; hands, eyes, and voice are the primary inputs, with Touch Plus compatibility for the existing Quest library. Meta promises 75+ gesture-first titles at LAUNCH.
Same Sticker, Different Job
At the $1,299 tier the two kits are within a dollar. The JOBS DIVERGE:
- STEAM FRAME — open SteamOS, 16GB RAM, bundled 6DoF controllers, path to the Steam library via native ARM64 titles or wireless PC streaming. BUY it if you want a gaming-first headset that EXISTS today.
- META VR GLASSES — Horizon OS continuity, micro-OLED cinema pitch, 100g on-face COMFORT, puck tradeoffs, no day-one controllers. Put it on a Spring 2027 WATCHLIST if weight and media matter more than a launch library you can VERIFY now.

Road to VR’s Connect hands-on praised passthrough and the light face feel while noting the puck’s active-cooling grill. Independent Frame runtime numbers are still THIN; Meta’s three-hour puck claim is clearer on paper and SHORTER for all-day work. Neither device is a Quest 3S substitute — both are premium BETS aimed at different buyers in the same BAND.
What Remains Open
Meta has not published refresh rate, full per-eye resolution, RAM/storage, preorder timing, or launch countries beyond a USD price. Steam Frame’s lottery model still LIMITS near-term SUPPLY. Until Spring 2027 review units exist, any “winner” verdict is really a use-case PICK: SHIPPING Steam library hardware versus a lighter glasses-and-puck system that has not left the KEYNOTE yet.
