Ghost Howls XR Week Peek: Steam Frame vs Quest 3 Pricing

The Ghost Howls wraps XR Week Peek for September 21: Steam Frame reviews land on a HARD comparison with Quest 3, Snap Specs leans enterprise, and Meta Connect is TWO days out.

The Ghost Howls (Skarredghost, Sep 21) frames the week as a STACK of shipping hardware rather than a single launch. Valve’s Steam Frame is LIVE. Snap’s SPECS got a second-stage content and ENTERPRISE push. Meta Connect opens Wednesday with camera-FREE Luna glasses and a Phoenix-plus-Codec DEMO still topping the rumor board. None of those pieces, the column argues, “radically change” XR alone — but TOGETHER they show the category still MOVING.

Steam Frame Reviews: Good, Not a Quest Killer

Skarredghost’s ROUNDUP of the first review wave is blunt. Display quality is roughly Quest-class. Comfort is decent and improves with Valve’s ergonomic kit. Tracking is SMOOTH. PC VR streaming WORKS, though not clearly better than top Virtual Desktop setups. Controllers split opinion. Standalone BATTERY is the weak link — some testers saw little more than an hour — while tethered PC play lasts longer. Openness and a clean out-of-box SteamOS flow are the CLEAR pluses.

The CONSENSUS the column keeps returning to: Frame is roughly as good as a Quest 3, arrives THREE years later, and costs about DOUBLE. Official pricing: $1,059 / €1,049 for 256GB and $1,299 / €1,279 for 1TB, with Half-Life: Alyx included in a standalone ARM port that reviewers call a clear downgrade from the PC original. Official accessories cover a missing power supply, an ergonomic strap kit, and replacement cushions; Valve also told PC Gamer it is working on a hot-swap battery strap with Index-style over-ear speakers.

Snap Specs: Content Push, Enterprise Pivot

After an AWE unveil that left many without a hands-on, Snap ran a follow-up event to show Specs on stage, open try-ons, and add software weight. The Ghost Howls lists the NEWS: a case that charges and supplies network connectivity so Specs need not lean on a phone; an EXPERIENCE center in Los Angeles; “Specs Intelligence” as an always-on AI assistant; and a slate of LENSES spanning sports training, Harry Potter, YouTube, Spotify, and Shopify try-ons, plus navigation, live translation, and productivity screens.

The STRATEGIC move is enterprise. At roughly $2,200, Snap is pairing Specs with Salesforce, AWS, NVIDIA, and HoloLight rather than betting only on consumers — a path Skarredghost calls SMART after Magic Leap’s expensive-AR history. Hands-on consensus so far: the glasses mostly DELIVER standalone AR, with caveats on hologram transparency, thick temple arms, and occasional lag.

Luna, Phoenix, Codec — Connect in 48 Hours

The week peek then pivots to Meta. Citing The Information, Skarredghost flags camera-free glasses codenamed LUNA as a privacy RESPONSE to “creep glasses” backlash. The column is SKEPTICAL: fewer features than camera frames, mics still record, and Meta’s endgame remains camera-heavy AR — so Luna looks like a TEMPORARY detour.

Separately, Connect speculation still centers on Project PHOENIX — Meta’s ultralight, media-first MR headset — and a possible on-stage Codec Avatar “phone call,” with coverage also tracked by Road to VR and UploadVR. VR.org’s Connect tracker puts the KEYNOTE Wednesday, September 23 at 4:00 PM PT / 7:00 PM ET, with the developer State of the Union Thursday at 10:00 AM PT, streamed from Menlo Park via meta.com/connect.

What the Week Actually Proves

Skarredghost’s through-line is MODEST: Frame validates open SteamOS VR without UPENDING Quest pricing math; Specs shows Snap will chase ENTERPRISE dollars and content density at a premium; Meta still has to PROVE Luna and Phoenix on stage. Connect is the next HARD CHECKPOINT — not another leak cycle.
