Jio’s Camera Glasses Paid Rs 5 by Voice at IMC 2026, but Jio Has Not Said Which UPI Rail Carries It or What It Can Spend

Reliance Jio used the OPENING day of India Mobile Congress 2026 to show camera glasses that PAY a merchant by VOICE. In the demo, a wearer LOOKS at a shop’s QR code, says “Hello Jio, scan this QR code and make a payment of Rs 5,” CONFIRMS with a spoken “Yes,” and the money MOVES over UPI, India’s real-time payments network. What Jio did NOT say is just as IMPORTANT: which UPI service carries the payment, how the wearer is AUTHENTICATED, and how MUCH the glasses can spend.

What Jio showed in New Delhi

IMC 2026 opened on October 7 at Yashobhoomi, the India International Convention and Expo Centre in Dwarka. According to ETV Bharat’s report from the Jio pavilion, the company showed THREE kinds of HARDWARE:

  • JioFrames, CAMERA glasses built for HANDS-FREE capture, live streaming and real-time visual help.
  • Audio frames for open-ear calls and music, in TWO versions: a standard frame, and a dual-temple design where buyers get INTERCHANGEABLE temples and pick the front frame from optical PARTNERS.
  • JioBuds, true wireless earbuds. MobileTelco reports they were shown giving live NAVIGATION.

ALL of it runs on JioRealityOS, a Jio platform woken by the phrase “Hello Jio.” Beyond payments, ETV Bharat lists live TRANSLATION across 12 Indian languages including English, and meeting RECORDING of up to 15 MINUTES that ends in a summary with speaker tracking.

The missing piece is the payment rail

ETV Bharat says that after the spoken “Yes,” the system “validates the UPI credentials” and transfers the funds. That is the WHOLE PUBLIC description. TelecomTalk notes that Jio has NOT disclosed the technical mechanism, the AUTHENTICATION process or the transaction LIMITS, and calls it PREMATURE to treat the demo as a payment PRODUCT. MobileTelco adds that security arrangements and SUPPORTED phones are also UNCONFIRMED.

That gap matters because India has ALREADY named TWO different routes for glasses PAYMENTS, a YEAR ago. At the Global Fintech Fest in October 2025, the RBI Deputy Governor announced small-value payments using wearable glasses via UPI Lite, the wallet-style version of UPI built for SMALL amounts, and called it “the first time UPI is extended to the wearable ecosystem.” The same week, Lenskart said its planned B Camera Smartglasses would pay by QR scan with “neither a phone nor a PIN,” and CREDITED NPCI’s UPI Circle feature, which lets a primary account holder DELEGATE payments, for LINKING the eyewear to a bank account.

Jio named NEITHER. The Rs 5 demo amount FITS a small-value design, but Jio has not said whether a wearer sets a SPENDING cap, whether a phone must be NEARBY, or what stops a CLEAR spoken “Yes” from someone ELSE. For glasses that can be WORN by anyone who picks them up, those are the questions BANKS will ask FIRST.

No price, no date

Jio has NOT announced PRICING, BATTERY life, CAMERA specifications or a launch date. MobileTelco says December 2026 has been REPORTED as possible timing, but Jio has not CONFIRMED it. The JioFrames product page DESCRIBES voice AI, photos, music, calls, translation, live streaming and fitness tips; per MobileTelco, it does NOT mention the UPI feature.

The reason to WATCH is UPI itself. TelecomTalk points out that Indians ALREADY use it for EVERYTHING from groceries to TRANSPORT, so a working scan-and-pay flow would turn Jio’s frames from a CAMERA and a voice ASSISTANT into a WALLET people could use DAILY. Until Jio PUBLISHES the rail, the LIMITS and the SAFEGUARDS, the IMC demo is a PROMISE, not a payment METHOD.
