Four days from Meta Connect, the company that once put AAA titles IN THE BOX has almost NO first-party studios left to make the next one.
VR.org FRAMES the PROBLEM ahead of the September 23–24 SHOW: Meta shipped Asgard’s Wrath 2 with Quest 3, then Batman: Arkham Shadow with Quest 3S — and the STUDIOS behind those pack-ins are mostly GONE. The published Connect AGENDA does NOT list a SINGLE QUEST game keynote slot.

Two Years of Free Games in the Box
At Connect 2023, Meta BUNDLED Asgard’s Wrath 2 with new Quest 3 units — a $59.99 RPG timed as a holiday EVENT, with claim windows later extended into mid-2024. A year later, Arkham Shadow rode with every new Quest 3S (and 512GB Quest 3) for months after the October 2024 LAUNCH. Road to VR called Asgard “in many ways the most AMBITIOUS game to ever launch on the Quest platform.”
Those were NOT RANDOM contractors. Facebook BOUGHT Sanzaru in 2020. Camouflaj joined the Meta family on the Connect 2022 STAGE alongside Twisted Pixel and Armature.

January Closures Emptied the Bench
On January 13, 2026, Meta SHUT DOWN Twisted Pixel (Deadpool VR), Sanzaru (Asgard’s Wrath), and Armature (Resident Evil 4 VR), part of REALITY LABS CUTS that Bloomberg pegged above 1,000 jobs. UploadVR and Engadget reported Meta’s own LINE: investment was shifting from “Metaverse toward Wearables,” with savings REINVESTED into glasses.

Camouflaj still EXISTS on PAPER, but UploadVR reported in January it “will no longer be developing VR GAMES,” with remaining staff pointed at new-hardware UX. An Arkham Shadow SEQUEL that had been at Sanzaru DIED with that STUDIO. Ready at Dawn closed earlier; Downpour’s Onward work was FOLDED into Camouflaj. Of the nine first-party game studios Road to VR once COUNTED, VR.org’s tally leaves Beat Games and BigBox still SHIPPING live-service titles — not box-ready exclusives.
Connect’s Agenda Tells the Story
Meta’s Connect 2026 page locks September 23–24, with Zuckerberg’s KEYNOTE widely reported for 4 PM PT on the 23rd. Sessions LEAN GLASSES, Muse AI, engine SDKs, and Horizon reach across Facebook and Instagram. Engadget’s Connect preview was BLUNT: with VR studios shuttered, huge game announcements tied to Phoenix look UNLIKELY.
Meta still FUNDS third-party content — Bosworth and content VP Samantha Ryan have cited rising spend and nearly $150 million in 2025 developer programs, per UploadVR — and Beat Saber keeps UPDATING. That is REAL MONEY. It is not the same job as OWNING a studio that ships a sixty-dollar exclusive INTO THE BOX on launch day.
What Buyers Should Watch Wednesday
For WEARABLES, Connect may DELIVER Luna camera-free glasses and a Phoenix HOLOGRAM demo. For Quest owners who bought because Batman came FREE, the bar is smaller and SPECIFIC: one first-party TRAILER, one Quest-only DATE, one studio Meta still pays to FINISH the game. Two years ago that answer arrived IN THE BOX. This year, even the TRAILER would be NEWS.
