Meta’s developer blog opened the second Meta VR Start Developer Competition at Connect: a $1 MILLION pot with a hard RULE that every ENTRY must work with HANDS alone, end to end.

Entries OPENED September 24, 2026 and CLOSE November 18, 2026. Winners are NAMED on or around December 11, 2026. The pool splits into 20 cash PRIZES from $20,000 to $100,000, with a $100,000 top PRIZE in each of three TRACKS — Entertainment, Gaming, and Productivity. Entrants must already be members of the Meta VR Start PROGRAM (or join before they submit). Official rules sit on Devpost.
The Hands-Only Rule Points at VR Glasses
The non-negotiable line from Meta is blunt: “Your experience must be fully usable with hands, end-to-end. Controller support is welcome, but not required.” That is not a Quest comfort TIP. It is shelf-STOCKING for Meta VR GLASSES, which Meta’s Newsroom post prices at $1,299.99 for a spring 2027 SHIP, at about 100 GRAMS, with no controllers in the box. Input is eyes, natural hand GESTURES, and voice.

At Connect, Meta also said more than 75 games will be playable with hand gestures alone at VR Glasses LAUNCH, on top of the wider Quest catalogue. A November DEADLINE and a seven-figure PURSE are how you try to grow that number before the hardware arrives. Mixed-News framed the same link: the contest RULE and the glasses SKU are one roadmap.
What the Brief Asks For
Beyond the hands REQUIREMENT, Meta’s guidelines read like a sofa product, not a room-scale arena. Designs should be SEATED and STATIONARY, with a fast cold START, clean pause and RESUME, and something satisfying in 10 minutes or less. Track examples include spatial CINEMA, multi-panel WORKSPACES, and seated puzzle or strategy games.
- ENTERTAINMENT: spatial cinema, interactive video, music visualization, immersive storytelling, media companions
- GAMING: puzzle, strategy, casual, social, narrative — genres that fit seated play without controllers
- PRODUCTIVITY: multi-panel workspaces, task management, creative tools, context-tied habits

Build on Quest 3 Today
Nobody outside Meta has the glasses yet. Meta’s answer is that nobody needs them for this contest. “VR Glasses run the same operating system as Meta Quest, so your engine, your SDKs, and your workflow carry over,” the developer post says. Build and TEST on a Quest 3, or on Meta XR SIMULATOR, Meta Spatial SIMULATOR, and the Immersive Web EMULATOR. Unity, Unreal, native, Android, and web paths are all in SCOPE. The Meta VR CLI and related agentic tooling are pitched as accelerators for the eight-week WINDOW.
What Meta Has Not Promised
Winning gets CASH, a developer-blog highlight, an end-of-competition livestream, and social category spotlights. Meta has NOT said that winners receive Horizon Store PLACEMENT, or how many entries it expects. Visibility is the marketing claim; storefront discovery is still a separate GATE. Submissions CLOSE November 18; the cheques land December 11 — more than a year before the glasses the rules were written for.
For Start members who already ship on Quest, the useful part is CONCRETE: the apps Meta wants for a spring 2027 form factor can be authored and TESTED on hardware that exists TODAY, under a hands-first RULE that matches how VR Glasses will actually be used.
