Meta is putting a photorealistic HOLOGRAM on Meta Ray-Ban Display video calls — and the version that arrives first is driven by your VOICE, not by face tracking. According to Meta’s newsroom and Connect recap, Hologram “begins rolling out in Early Access on WHATSAPP to Meta Ray-Ban Display users in the US later this FALL,” after a short self-capture in the Meta AI app.

That detail MATTERS. Nothing on the glasses watches your EXPRESSION. “Your hologram is driven entirely by your VOICE, and the hologram model INFERS your expression from what you’re saying and how you’re saying it,” Meta says in its September 23–24 newsroom post. A raised eyebrow from tone is INFERENCE, not sensor tracking — and Meta has published no accuracy figures for either approach.
Mixed-News (Chris Steven, Sep 24) flags the same DISTINCTION: the Ray-Ban Display hologram is the NARROW, voice-driven shipping path; the fuller expression-tracking hologram waits for different hardware.
Phone Self-Capture, Then the Glasses Handle the Rest

Setup is a short CAPTURE session on a phone inside the Meta AI app. Meta’s pitch is cooking with a relative on the opposite coast while your HANDS stay on the knife — no propping a phone, no awkward angle. Once captured, the glasses send a SYNTHETIC face into the call so the other person sees you without a selfie cam in the FRAME.

The research groundwork is old: Codec Avatars, smartphone-to-3D pipelines, and years of Meta demos. What is NEW is the CONSTRAINTS Meta is willing to accept to SHIP something first — voice-only drive, WhatsApp-only, US-only, Early Access.
Early Access: One App, One Country, Later This Fall

Meta gave no firm date. The newsroom says “later this FALL”; Connect language also points to “the coming months.” Both LIMIT the rollout to WHATSAPP, to the United States, and to Early Access — Meta’s usual phrasing for a feature that reaches a SUBSET of users first.
Timing is awkward for everyone else. Meta Ray-Ban Display went on sale in CANADA and the UK on SEPTEMBER 23, with preorders opening in FRANCE, ITALY, and GERMANY ahead of availability on OCTOBER 13. Those buyers get the glasses and, for now, no HOLOGRAM. Meta has also not said what the person on the other end needs, or whether a hologram call costs anything.
Expression-Tracking Hologram Waits for Spring 2027

At Connect, Meta also announced a second, FULLER hologram for Meta VR Glasses. That version carries “your real-time EXPRESSIONS and REACTIONS,” with SPATIAL AUDIO placing the caller’s voice where they appear. It is also APP-AGNOSTIC — Meta says it works “with whichever calling app you’re using, from WhatsApp to ZOOM,” and people joining from a phone or computer see the hologram on their SCREEN.

Meta VR Glasses go on sale in SPRING 2027 at $1,299.99 in the US. Until then, the expressive, SENSOR-DRIVEN experience remains a 2027 PRODUCT. As UploadVR notes in its hands-on contrast, a shoulders-up hologram reaches Ray-Ban Display FIRST; the full-body VR version launches with the HEADSET. For readers following our earlier coverage of Codec Avatars on VR Glasses and Ray-Ban Display’s Connect feature list, this post isolates the VOICE-DRIVEN WhatsApp path that actually SHIPS this fall.
A hologram still needs somewhere to APPEAR, which keeps the feature on frames that have a DISPLAY. Ray-Ban Display remains Meta’s only consumer pair with one. For now, the feature built to SHOW someone your FACE is one that never LOOKS at it — and that is exactly how Meta intends to get HOLOGRAM into real CALLS before Spring 2027 hardware arrives.
