Somnium Space 3.1.7 Adds DLSS 5 and Treats Desktop as First-Class

Somnium Space has SHIPPED VERSION 3.1.7 through its LAUNCHER, pairing NVIDIA DLSS 5 neural RENDERING with a redesigned Worlds Hub, fuller DESKTOP parity, and social PRESENCE UPGRADES that keep crowded sessions STEADIER. Coverage published September 25, 2026 on Somnium Times frames the BUILD as a rendering and presence step, not a cosmetic PATCH.

The headline technical CHANGE is a new set of upscalers and rendering PATHS: FSR, Unity STP, DLSS 4.5, and DLSS 5. Somnium Times reports the DLSS 5 path is TUNED for Somnium rather than left on default settings, with the stated aim of lifting DETAIL and lighting DEPTH while keeping each world’s original design INTACT — architecture, materials, lighting, and atmosphere. PRESETS let users match quality to their HARDWARE.

That rendering thesis only matters if busy SPACES stay PLAYABLE. Version 3.1.7 also OPTIMIZES background systems that often tax social VR platforms: name tags, face TRACKING, lip sync, voice and avatar CULLING, Magica Cloth, Dynamic Bones, and VRIK. The combined effect, according to the write-up, is a more stable FRAME rate when events fill UP.

Worlds Hub Becomes a Place, Not a Menu

The Worlds Hub has been FULLY REDESIGNED and grouped into four CATEGORIES: Games, Events, Chill, and Arts. Somnium Times describes a theme-park LAYOUT with rides and landmarks in view, including the T-Rex from Dino Park as a clear POINTER to that world. The hub is pitched as a meeting PLACE before players walk into a game, an event, a quieter world, or something in Arts.

The update also adds Base Reality INSTANCES and improves instance SWITCHING. Elevators and the funiculars to the floating islands are now network-SYNCHRONIZED, so shared rides stay in step for everyone in the INSTANCE.

Social VFX, Gestures, Eyes, and Full-Body Tracking

Version 3.1.7 adds visual EFFECTS for likes, dislikes, and level-ups so those actions PLAY in the world rather than only as menu entries. Gestures get cleaner MOTION and TIMING. Automatic eye movement gives avatars a more natural GAZE — glancing, settling on a face, shifting the way they do in a real conversation — and pairs with face tracking and lip sync so speech and expression line up more closely with the person behind the AVATAR.

Full body tracking is described as more intuitive and PERSISTENT. Trackers can be moved with grip and rotated with trigger. Positions can be SAVED, and calibration is retained when a user leaves Somnium and returns with the same SETUP.

Desktop Wearables and Cars Are No Longer a Fallback

Not every session requires a HEADSET. Somnium Times stresses that 3.1.7 treats the desktop client as a full way to INHABIT the platform. Wearables are now available on DESKTOP: browse a collection, equip pieces, and change a look without putting on a headset. Cars are on desktop as well — approach a vehicle and press F to enter, or X on a gamepad — which makes parcel-to-parcel TRAVEL practical at a DESK.

When a session ends, the exit screen now shows session STATISTICS before shutdown: current session time, karma gained, likes gained, and related totals, broken out for today, the current week, and the current month. The website adds Steam sign-in, Steam account linking, and nickname changes. The launcher adds pagination, installation status on the launch button, a redesigned referrals section, an updated Somnium Map, and a wide set of stability FIXES.

Why It Matters for Social VR

Social METAVERSE platforms live or die on two axes that usually fight each other: image QUALITY that sells the place, and PERFORMANCE that keeps a crowd from melting the frame. Somnium’s 3.1.7 bet is that a tuned DLSS 5 path plus background culling can move both at once, while desktop wearables and cars stop treating flat-screen users as second-class CITIZENS. For a blockchain-rooted social VR world that also ships its own Somnium VR1 headset, that is a coherent product STORY: one client stack, multiple ways to show UP.

The build is available NOW through the Somnium Launcher at somniumspace.com. Primary detail for this report comes from the September 25, 2026 Somnium Times walkthrough of 3.1.7; NVIDIA’s broader DLSS 5 neural-rendering notes provide the industry CONTEXT for the upscaler family Somnium is adopting.
