Valve’s Steam Frame has been shipping for barely a MONTH, and the company’s own KERNEL trees already point at a MID-GEN DISPLAY REFRESH. On October 14, SteamFrameHub reported that PUBLIC SteamOS KERNEL branches describe a device codenamed Plano with MICRO-OLED panels at 3552×3840 pixels per eye. Notebookcheck and Steam Deck HQ independently RETOLD the same strings the same day. Valve has NOT announced Plano. The readout is kernel ANALYSIS, not a ROADMAP.

That MATTERS because the shipped Frame still uses dual 2160×2160 LCD panels, per Valve’s public product detail and the Steam Frame Wikipedia record. Moving to MICRO-OLED at roughly THREE TIMES the NATIVE pixel count per eye would be the LARGEST optical LEAP Valve has shown for this line since launch — if the INCOMPLETE code ever becomes a product.
What the Kernel Branches Actually Say
SteamFrameHub traced Plano through Valve’s public kernel sources, mirrored by the evlaV project on GitHub. The site says work began on a deckard-oled branch in December 2025, paused, then continued on deckard-plano from March into early October 2026. Deckard was the long-running code name for the Frame itself, so an OLED branch under that family is a CREDIBLE SIGNAL even when marketing stays quiet.
The reported PANEL MODE is the HEADLINE number: 3552×3840 per eye, matching the MICRO-OLED DENSITY used in Samsung’s Galaxy XR. Refresh sits at 90 Hz in the strings SteamFrameHub cites, with Valve EXPERIMENTING toward 120 Hz. The shipped Frame, by contrast, advertises up to 144 Hz on LCD, with that TOP rate still labeled experimental on Valve’s own materials.

Same Chip, Lower Default Render
Plano KEPT the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, according to the same reporting. That choice caps display BANDWIDTH. SteamFrameHub says the DEFAULT RENDER TARGET is 1776×1920 per eye — HALF the PANEL NATIVE count — so games can hit roughly the same PERFORMANCE budget as today’s Frame. An experimental 1.5× global SCALING mode reportedly pushes 2368×2560, trading PERFORMANCE for SHARPNESS.
Native 3552×3840 would be a BANDWIDTH TRAP on this SoC without HELP. The help SteamFrameHub highlights is FOVEATED SCALING: HARDWARE in the display controller that scales image slices so the gaze region looks denser without paying full native cost everywhere. That is DISTINCT from FOVEATED rendering (game engines) and from Valve’s existing foveated streaming (encoder bitrate), both of which the shipped Frame already uses.
Timeline, Price, and What Is Still Missing
SteamFrameHub calls the code INCOMPLETE and guesses a LATE 2027 earliest ship, stressing that owners should not CANCEL reservations. Notebookcheck repeats that caution: there is no GUARANTEE Plano becomes a commercial SKU. Pricing is UNKNOWN. The shipped Frame already sits at $1,059 / $1,299 for 256 GB and 1 TB; micro-OLED would almost CERTAINLY RAISE the asked PRICE if Valve sells it as a SEPARATE SKU.
Also ABSENT from the leak: battery impact, weight, thermal limits, a confirmed panel vendor, and any Valve STATEMENT. SteamFrameHub speculates Sony or Samsung as panel sources because those densities match Galaxy XR panels; that remains GUESSWORK until Valve or a supplier files something public.

The TIMING is awkward in a USEFUL way. The same day Plano coverage broke, Valve also STOPPED producing the Index and put remaining Index parts 20% off — a retail goodbye that Metaverse Watcher already covered. A kernel TRAIL for an OLED Frame refresh, while Index EXITS and Frame reservations still STRETCH into 2027 for some buyers, tells a SINGLE STORY: Valve is CONCENTRATING the PC-VR and STANDALONE bet on Frame, and the display roadmap inside the kernel is already looking past the first LCD units.
For NOW, treat Plano as a CREDIBLE ENGINEERING DIRECTION with public kernel EVIDENCE, amplified by Notebookcheck and Steam Deck HQ, not as a PRE-ORDER. The shipped Frame remains the only Valve STANDALONE you can BUY. If Valve ever PROMOTES an OLED SKU, the numbers to CHECK against these strings are native panel resolution, DEFAULT render target, whether foveated scaling ships, and whether the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 STAYS.
