Valve Tells Steam Frame Holders December 2026 or 2027, but the Later Group Gets No Month Until January

Valve has given Steam Frame reservation holders the ONE thing the rollout has lacked: a rough ARRIVAL window. The Steam Frame page now tells each reservation holder whether a headset should reach them by DECEMBER 2026 or at some point in 2027, according to GamingOnLinux, which published the update on October 10. Valve also RELEASED the headset’s CAD FILES for non-commercial use.

What Valve Actually Changed

The update is NARROW. Holders in the 2027 group get NO month, only a promise of more detail “by January.” Valve also restated the 72-HOUR rule: once a purchase email arrives, the buyer has three days to complete the order before the reservation PASSES to someone else. People on the WAITLIST, rather than holding a reservation, get nothing new. Per GamingOnLinux, their only path remains a reservation freed up when another buyer DECLINES to purchase.

The CAD release carries a clear LIMIT. The files are licensed for NON-COMMERCIAL use; anyone who wants to sell accessories built from them still HAS to deal with Valve DIRECTLY. GamingOnLinux cites steamcommunity.com and gitlab.steamos.cloud as its sources for both changes.

Why the Window Matters

The Frame launched September 14 at $1,059, and PURCHASE emails began going out September 18 in a shuffled order. Until now, a holder could not tell whether the wait was WEEKS or MONTHS. A TWO-BUCKET answer is COARSE, but it lets buyers decide whether to keep WAITING, buy a Quest 3 in the meantime, or SKIP the generation.

The demand signal is REAL even at limited supply. Valve’s September Steam Hardware Survey, after a revision, put the Frame at 0.41 PERCENT of VR headsets counted, roughly one in 244 HEADSETS, as VR.org noted. That figure covers under two weeks of deliveries and is NOT a sales number.

The Software Side Is Moving Faster Than Hardware

The window update lands a day after SteamOS 0.4 reached ALL Frame owners on the stable channel. Valve’s changelog, quoted by GamingOnLinux and PC Guide, claims battery gains of UP TO 12%, a fix for streaming “Error 17” that still needs SteamVR 2.18.2 from the beta branch, and a DOMINANT-EYE-only tracking option.

The Metaverse Watcher Take

This is Valve managing EXPECTATIONS, not fixing supply. Valve has NOT said how many UNITS it has built, how many reservations sit in each window, or what pushes a holder into 2027. Until it does, the December label is a CEILING, not a date. The CAD files are the more DURABLE move: they invite a THIRD-PARTY accessory market for a headset whose ecosystem is still THIN.
