Arcturus Vision has given its Steam Frame camera app a NEW way to HAND the view back to the headset when the lights go OUT. An update to the Arcturus Vision Camera app, posted on Steam at 15:43 UTC on October 10, adds what the developer calls “Auto night vision: enables built-in passthrough when IR LEDs are on (in the dark).” In plain terms, when Steam Frame’s own INFRARED illuminators switch on, the app now DROPS its COLOR feed and returns to Valve’s MONOCHROME passthrough, which can STILL see in a DARK room.

What the October 10 update actually changes
The release GROUPS THREE camera-switch changes. Besides the AUTOMATIC night switch, it adds “Controller bindings: Switch passthrough using any controller button long-press combo you want,” replacing a FIXED shortcut with one the OWNER PICKS. It also adds “Status overlays,” described as “An overlay appears to tell you when a switch occurs,” so the wearer is not left GUESSING which CAMERA they are looking through.
The same build widens the video library from a two-by-two grid to a THREE-by-two layout, “removing wasted space,” and FIXES a bug where scrubbing a video “could sometimes show a decoder error.” The app itself is FREE on Steam, where it has been listed since September 14; the PAID part is the camera it drives, the $149 clip-on color module we covered in September, which plugs into Steam Frame’s front EXPANSION port.

A chaperone warning, in the developer’s own words
The most USEFUL line in the notes is a CAUTION. “Sometimes, switching cameras can temporarily remove your chaperone,” Arcturus writes. “The issue can also occur with heavy system load without camera switching. We are working to provide Valve with a bug report on this issue.” The chaperone is the BOUNDARY that keeps a player from WALKING into furniture, so a feature that switches cameras AUTOMATICALLY in the dark sits RIGHT next to a known way to LOSE that boundary.
That is the developer’s account, and the report is one it says it is PREPARING, NOT one it has filed. Valve has NOT PUBLICLY acknowledged the issue. MIXED notes that Steam Frame owners separately reported the boundary DISAPPEARING while streaming from a PC in early October, but Arcturus does NOT link its note to that case, and neither should readers without MORE evidence.
Six updates in ten days

The night-vision build is ONE of SIX Steam announcements Arcturus posted between October 2 and October 12, in just TEN days. The cadence matters because MUCH of it is REPAIR work on a YOUNG product:
- October 2: a FOVEATION fix at lower resolutions, then new 24, 33.33 and 50 fps recording modes, with 33.33 or 50 fps RECOMMENDED in Europe to reduce FLICKER from artificial light, plus a fix for videos recorded UPSIDE-down.
- October 7: a “Player UI Overhaul” with a FLOATING control bar, RESIZABLE windows and HEALTH checks for dimmed passthrough and judder, followed hours later by a fix for SIGNIFICANT frame drops at High and Ultra encoder quality. Arcturus said tracking struggles “can still cause drops.”
- October 10: auto night vision, custom BUTTON bindings, status overlays and the larger library grid.
- October 12 (03:52 UTC): a fix for EMPTY per-frame exposure and gain metadata, health checks that NO LONGER pop up at launch, and detection of “another condition where SteamVR could make passthrough extremely dark,” with an OFFER to fix it.
The October 12 note names NO cause and NO SteamVR build, so what ships is a DETECTION and a workaround, NOT an EXPLANATION of why passthrough goes DARK.
Why it matters
Steam Frame shipped with MONOCHROME passthrough, and Arcturus is the most VISIBLE THIRD-PARTY attempt to add COLOR through Valve’s OPEN accessory port. Automatic night vision addresses an OBVIOUS limit of a VISIBLE-LIGHT camera: it is USELESS in the dark, while Valve’s IR-lit cameras are NOT. The PRACTICAL test is whether the switch is RELIABLE enough to trust, and by the developer’s own admission, camera switching can STILL drop the chaperone. Until Valve RESPONDS to that BUG report, owners who play in DIM rooms should treat the boundary as something to VERIFY after EVERY switch.
