Road to VR: Arcturus Vision Camera Makes Steam Frame Passthrough Readable

Road to VR’s Scott Hayden published a hands-on REVIEW of the ARCTURUS VISION CAMERA on September 28 — and the VERDICT is unusually CLEAN for a headset accessory. At about $150 and 10 GRAMS, the expansion-port module turns Valve’s monochrome STEAM FRAME passthrough into a COLOR view Hayden calls a literal night-and-day DIFFERENCE.

Plug In, No Restart

Hayden’s REVIEW stresses how little FRICTION the accessory adds. The module snaps into Frame’s hidden expansion port under the nose bridge and, without restarting the headset, immediately REPLACES the built-in passthrough anywhere SteamVR shows the real world — the dashboard background and mixed-reality titles alike. That plug-and-play behavior is the same INTEGRATION UploadVR flagged when Arcturus announced the CAMERA ahead of Frame’s September 14 launch.

The Phone-Screen Test

The practical bar Hayden uses is simple: can you READ a smartphone SCREEN through passthrough? With Frame’s default grayscale view, he says there is no hope. With the Arcturus module, the phone becomes READABLE. Perceptually, he places the upgraded view about on par with QUEST 3, while both still trail APPLE VISION PRO. Part of the praise, he notes honestly, is that Frame’s stock passthrough starts so weak — Arcturus brings it up to contemporary STANDARDS rather than leaping past every rival.

Spatial Video Beyond Color

Color alone would justify the BUY for many owners. Arcturus also ships a free Steam Frame app for spatial CAPTURE — up to 6MP per eye (2,464 × 2,464) at 60 FPS, or 1.5MP at 120 FPS, with 10-bit HDR — and playback that moves the video FRAME in space to match the recorded head path. A Sync tool for Windows and Mac converts those recordings for other headsets. Gaussian-splat generation still needs Linux command-line tools and an NVIDIA GPU, so that path stays ADVANCED; a free Gaussian XR viewer lets owners explore example SPLATS on-device.

Why It Matters

Today’s Underdogs and reservation chatter treat Frame as a PC-first gaming kit. Hayden’s review reframes the ACCESSORY as quality-of-life hardware: even if you never open a mixed-reality title, a sharp color passthrough makes the $1,059+ headset easier to LIVE WITH. Metaverse Watcher already covered the $149 announcement; the September 28 REVIEW is the first major trade VERDICT that calls the module straightforwardly RECOMMENDABLE — tiny, fairly priced, and deep enough that it feels first-party. If Frame is already in your kit, the COLOR upgrade is the accessory that closes the biggest DAILY gap.
