Boz: Quest 3 Nearly Matched 3S Sales — Comfort Beat the $200 Gap

Meta CTO Andrew “Boz” Bosworth gave The Ghost Howls an unscripted three-question interview at META CONNECT 2026 — and the hardware takeaway was not a secret roadmap. It was a SALES pattern: Meta expected QUEST 3S to outsell QUEST 3 by a wide margin. Instead, the higher-spec headset sold NEARLY as well as the cheaper SKU.

The $200 Lesson From Internal Data

Bosworth’s summary, as reported by Skarredghost on September 25, is blunt. Meta assumed a lower PRICE would pull the mass market to Quest 3S. The result challenged that ASSUMPTION: Quest 3 kept pace “almost like” Quest 3S. COMFORT and quality of experience, he said, mattered as much as a $200 difference for many BUYERS.

That is not a public unit-sales disclosure — Meta still does not publish Quest attach numbers by SKU — but it is a rare ON-CAMERA read of Reality Labs’ internal demand SIGNAL from the company’s CTO. A secondary write-up of the same exchange on StartMyGame (September 26) matches the Quest 3 versus 3S PARITY point and the comfort-over-price FRAMING.

Why That Fuels Lightweight VR Glasses

Bosworth tied the finding directly to META VR GLASSES. Seeing buyers pay for a better face-worn experience gave Meta CONFIDENCE to push a lighter form factor rather than race only to the bottom of the headset RACK. The plan he sketched: keep the lightweight ARCHITECTURE, then work the PRICE down over time.

That lines up with the public sheet Meta published at Connect. Meta’s Newsroom post prices the glasses at $1,299.99 for SPRING 2027, with about 100 GRAMS on the face and compute in a tethered PUCK — a comfort bet that only makes sense if buyers will pay for the lighter STACK.

Contact Lenses Stay Off the Near Roadmap

Asked about smart CONTACT LENSES, Bosworth was skeptical on physics, not hype. Meaningful AR in a lens, he argued, still points at bulky SCLERAL designs large enough to carry POWER and electronics. He said he has not seen a solution that avoids that form and still powers properly — so Meta is NOT treating ocular inserts as the near-term PATH.

For now the company’s wearable ladder stays where Connect put it: Quest headsets, Ray-Ban Meta and Display lines, and spring-2027 VR GLASSES. The Boz clip does not rewrite those SKUS. It explains why Meta is willing to sell a lighter, pricier face computer when a $200 cut on Quest 3S failed to erase demand for the better HEADSET.
