Mashable writer Alex Perry published a September 25 paper comparison that skips the Vision Pro FIGHT and asks a blunter FAMILY question: how do META VR GLASSES stack against QUEST 3, the headset Meta still sells for half the money?

Perry’s price line is the hard STOP. Glasses launch in SPRING 2027 at $1,299. Quest 3 can be bought TODAY for $599 — “literally more than TWICE” as much for the new pair, in Mashable’s phrasing. Meta’s own Connect post lists $1,299.99 and the same spring window, so the sticker is not a rumor.
Where Quest 3 Still Wins on Paper
The comparison table is not a clean WIN for the glasses. Perry notes Quest 3 still leads on FIELD OF VIEW — roughly 110° × 96° versus the glasses’ 70° × 66° — plus larger starting STORAGE (512GB against 128GB, with the glasses offering a microSD PATH) and included Touch controllers. Controllers stay COMPATIBLE with the glasses, but they are not in the box.

Design is the other half of that TRADEOFF. Quest 3 is a full headset at about 515 GRAMS. The glasses put about 100 GRAMS on the face and park processors, battery, and storage in a wired PUCK — the same ARCHITECTURAL split Apple used for Vision Pro’s battery pack, and the reason Meta can pitch all-day comfort for CINEMA sessions.
Where the Glasses Pull Ahead
On panel and silicon, Mashable gives the glasses the EDGE: micro-OLED at 2,412 × 2,288 per eye versus Quest 3’s LCD at 2,064 × 2,208, 12GB RAM versus 8GB, and Qualcomm’s newer SNAPDRAGON REALITY ELITE versus XR2 Gen 2. Perry also flags eye tracking and FACE tracking on the glasses — capabilities Quest 3 does not ship — plus IMAX ENHANCED certification, Disney+ 3D titles, MAC and WINDOWS virtual displays over USB-C or wireless, and HOLOGRAM WhatsApp calls at true scale.

Software overlap is real: both run Horizon OS, and Perry writes that the glasses support the Quest content CATALOG. The glasses-only stack is where the PREMIUM ask shows up — controller-free Beat Saber updates, IMAX framing, and productivity monitors that Quest 3 was never sold to own.
Same Brand, Different Jobs
Perry’s close is careful. The glasses look “broadly more CAPABLE,” but buyers may still prefer Quest 3 for immersion, included controllers, and a price that does not wait until 2027. That is the useful FRAME for Metaverse Watcher readers: not Vision Pro versus Meta, but Meta’s own ladder — a sealed QUEST headset you can buy this week versus a glasses-and-puck cinema that still has six months of runway. Nothing here is a retail HANDS-ON; Mashable is clear the glasses cannot be tested yet. The paper fight is already sharp enough.
