Arm Patents Ultrasound Vestibular Fix for XR Motion Sickness

Arm holds a newly granted U.S. patent for cancelling XR motion sickness with ultrasound — not another comfort vignette, but low-intensity focused ultrasound aimed at the balance organs behind your ears. Road to VR and VR.org flagged the grant; neither treats it as a shipping product.

The filing is titled Method for minimising motion sickness for head-mountable extended reality. Arm filed in the UK on August 1, 2022 (granted as GB2621131B on October 23, 2024). The U.S. application followed on July 24, 2023 as US2024/0033175 and was granted as U.S. Patent 12,653,753 on June 16, 2026 — the date that put the idea back in front of the industry.

What the patent claims

Everything starts with how much the picture is moving. The method can interrogate the XR application generating the frames or analyze the displayed sequence itself. It measures visual motion, weighs it against the wearer’s actual head motion, and checks the gap against a configured threshold.

Cross the threshold and hardware fires. Processing circuitry drives ultrasonic transducers placed in headphones or in the headset body. The stimulation is Low Intensity Focused Ultrasound (LiFU) — bone-conducted vibration or air-conducted sound. The document specifies about 5 MHz for selective vestibular activation. More visual motion means more acoustic radiation force: a small drift left in the frame is meant to produce a small physical sense of drifting left.

Targeting matters. Arm describes one or more transducers per ear in a beamformed array — 1-D linear, 1.5-D rectangular, or 2-D — so the system can aim at specific inner-ear structures instead of flooding the whole region.

Why the inner ear

Headset motion sickness is a disagreement. Your eyes report a corner taken at speed. Your semicircular canals — three fluid-filled loops — report a person sitting still. That conflict is the nausea. A decade of comfort tooling mostly reduces what the eyes claim: vignettes, snap turning, teleport locomotion, cockpits, higher refresh rates, lower motion-to-photon latency.

Arm’s patent goes after the other half. Instead of making the visuals lie less, it tries to make the inner ear agree with the lie. The filing also keeps the software levers: reduce visual motion, fade the image, introduce a vignette, or recalibrate when sensed movement does not match expected visual motion.

Arm does not ship headsets

That constraint is the story. Arm designs and licenses processor architecture; it does not sell consumer XR hardware. Its IP sits underneath Qualcomm Snapdragon parts and Apple silicon that run most shipping headsets. A patent from Arm is a licenseable idea, not a product roadmap.

Precedent is thin. Samsung’s C-Lab showed Entrim 4D at SXSW in 2016 — headphones using galvanic vestibular stimulation — and it never shipped. Ten years later, no consumer headset includes direct vestibular stimulation. Apple has been filing nearby territory too; VR.org notes U.S. 12,411,543 (“Orientation feedback devices and methods,” granted September 9, 2025) covering mechanical orientation feedback on a head-mounted display. Silicon companies are patenting ways to tell your body which way is up. Almost none of it is in a box you can buy.

What to do with it

Nothing yet. A grant means an examiner agreed the claims were novel. It does not mean silicon exists, that anyone ran a clinical study, or that a headset maker has taken a license. Road to VR’s closing line still holds: a patent shows what a company sought to protect, not what will appear in a product.

Comfort in 2026 is still a settings menu. If artificial locomotion makes you ill, choose games and comfort options accordingly — and treat ultrasound in the ear as a research claim, not a 2026 feature checklist.
