GIGAZINE Weighs a Retail Steam Frame at 438g — Glasses Fit, Modular Strap, Controllers

GIGAZINE published a DETAILED retail unboxing of Valve’s Steam Frame on September 27, 2026 — the kind of HARDWARE walkthrough that fills gaps left by software notes and tear-downs. The unit is a SHIPPED headset, not a mockup, and the piece answers the practical questions buyers keep asking: MEASURED weight, glasses CLEARANCE, button layout, and whether the strap really SEPARATES from the core.

Steam Frame launched in mid-September 2026 as Valve’s standalone SteamOS headset with wireless PC streaming. GIGAZINE ordered at RELEASE and wrote up the physical kit the day the unit ARRIVED. That timing matters: Metaverse Watcher has already covered Lepton, Half-Life: Alyx on-device, and the iFixit repair path. This post sticks to what the Japan unboxing MEASURED and photographed on the bench.

What Arrives in the Box

GIGAZINE lists the CONTENTS once everything is out of the presentation tray: Steam Frame headset, controllers, wireless ADAPTER, eye spacer, USB Type-C cable, safety leaflet, and cleaning cloth. The packaging line — “Your games in every dimension” — matches Valve’s consumer framing for a headset that is both a STREAMING terminal and a local SteamOS machine.

Official accessory pricing from Valve’s September 14 launch coverage still sits beside the kit, not inside it: a 45W-class power supply sold SEPARATELY, plus optional ergonomic and replacement packs. GIGAZINE notes the same charger gap in the battery section — bring your own USB-C supply.

Measured Weight, Optics, and Glasses Fit

On a scale, GIGAZINE records the assembled headset at 438 GRAMS, with external dimensions listed as 175 × 95 × 110 mm. Valve’s published sheet — summarized in independent SPEC trackers that cite the Steam Frame product page — quotes 185 grams for the VISOR alone and about 440 grams fully assembled with facial interface, speakers, strap, and rear BATTERY. The GIGAZINE figure lands within a few grams of that COMPLETE number, which is the useful cross-check for anyone comparing retail units.

Optics notes from the unboxing: custom pancake lenses, a top-mounted IPD dial, and a lock switch between the lenses. GIGAZINE cites an IPD range of 60–70 mm, dual LCD panels at 2160 × 2160 per eye, refresh from 72 to 144 Hz with 144 Hz labeled EXPERIMENTAL, and a field of view “up to 100 degrees.” Valve’s own conservative FOV quote in launch materials is WIDER (commonly reported as 110° × 110°). Treat the GIGAZINE FOV line as a HANDS-ON summary, not a replacement for Valve’s published optics claim.

Eyeglass wearers get a HARD LIMIT in the write-up: maximum eyeglass lens width of 140 mm. Larger frames will not seat inside the gasket. GIGAZINE’s advice matches the accessory market Metaverse Watcher already tracked — contacts, or SEPARATE prescription inserts — rather than forcing oversize street glasses into the foam.

Modular Strap, Battery, and Tracking Cameras

The strap carries the RECHARGEABLE pack at the rear. GIGAZINE lists a 21.6 Wh lithium-ion cell, USB Type-C on the pack for charge and data (USB 2.0, up to 15V/3A / 45W), and no 3.5 mm jack — wired audio needs a USB-C adapter. Speakers are described as built into the strap even when grille holes are not obvious from outside.

GIGAZINE then does the MODULAR demo owners care about: remove the magnet-held face gasket, flip the red-marked RELEASE switches, and separate the core MODULE from the head strap. That split is the same architecture iFixit’s September teardown praised for repair access — and the reason third-party straps or battery swaps remain PLAUSIBLE later. A microSD slot sits behind the gasket area, consistent with Valve’s Deck-family expandable storage story.

Outside, GIGAZINE calls out reflective front material with infrared ILLUMINATION, lower left/right cameras for inside-out TRACKING, side clusters for AUX/power and volume, and a bottom EXPANSION port for accessories such as a color camera. Those details line up with Valve’s greyscale tracking camera set and the accessory path already shipping Arcturus color passthrough as an ADD-ON.

Controllers and the Wireless Adapter

Each controller WEIGHED 132 grams with its AA cell installed. Layout is gamepad-parity: D-pad, View, and Steam on the left; ABXY, Menu, and Steam on the right; full-size TMR thumbsticks with capacitive touch; grip buttons; L1/L2 and R1/R2; capacitive sensing across inputs for finger tracking; and built-in haptics. That matches Valve’s drift-resistant TMR pitch and the “input device required” stance — Steam Frame still does not sell itself as a hands-only headset.

The bundled wireless ADAPTER is the dedicated 6 GHz / Wi-Fi 6E PC link. GIGAZINE measured the dongle at roughly 30 mm wide and 10 mm thick and WARNED that crowded motherboard USB stacks may block neighboring ports. Functionally it is the same streaming path Valve documents for low-latency PC VR without depending on a home router’s 6 GHz radio.

Why This Unboxing Matters Now

Two weeks after Steam Frame’s September launch window, retail HARDWARE is finally reaching writers who can put numbers on a scale. GIGAZINE’s 438-gram MEASUREMENT, 140 mm glasses ceiling, 132-gram controllers, and confirmed STRAP split are the practical deltas next to Valve’s 185 / 440-gram sheet. The site says a full usage review will follow; until then, this appearance piece is the CLEANEST public checklist for fit, modularity, and kit contents.
