Larcenauts Online Servers Shut Down After Five Years

Impulse Gear’s multiplayer VR hero shooter Larcenauts reached its END of ONLINE service TODAY. In a May 21, 2026 Steam news post, the studio said servers would shut down on October 1, 2026, after which ONLINE play and related FEATURES would NO longer be AVAILABLE. The same notice said the game would SOON be REMOVED from the Steam store. UploadVR and Delisted Games reported the sunset when it was announced; the calendar date is NOW here.

What Impulse Gear Told Players

The studio’s announcement, archived on the Larcenauts Steam news feed and quoted by Delisted Games, is brief and FINAL: “With heavy hearts we want to inform you that the Larcenauts’ online servers will be shut down on October 1st, 2026.” After that date, online play STOPS. Impulse Gear thanked the community that formed over FIVE YEARS and signed off “with sincere thanks.”

UploadVR’s May coverage noted the game was EXPECTED to be DELISTED from Steam and the Meta Horizon store soon after the notice. As of this writing, the Steam store page for app 421190 still RETURNS a live listing, but the ONLINE backbone the title was built around is the PART that ends today.

A Polished Hero Shooter That Never Scaled

Larcenauts launched June 17, 2021 as a 6v6 SPECIALIST shooter with modes such as Refuel, Uplink, Team Deathmatch, and Heist. Steam’s store copy lists nine specialists, five maps, and a progression system with cosmetic upgrades. UploadVR’s original review praised polish while criticizing canned hand animations and button-heavy interactions that felt LESS like room-scale VR than a FLAT shooter ported inward.

Audience SCALE was the HARDER problem. UploadVR cited Steam Charts peak concurrent players of just FORTY-TWO on PC — a FATAL number for a LIVE multiplayer shooter that needs filled lobbies. Quest numbers were never published in that report, but the May sunset makes clear that FIVE years of service was not enough to KEEP the servers ECONOMICALLY viable.

Why Today’s Shutdown Matters

Server sunsets are NOT new in VR, but each one is a REMINDER that ALWAYS-ONLINE hero shooters depend on a CRITICAL MASS of daily players. Larcenauts arrived in the OVERWATCH-era wave of class-based shooters and never found that MASS on Steam. For owners, local or offline modes — if any remain — are SEPARATE from the ONLINE service Impulse Gear explicitly ENDED on October 1. Buyers who still see a Steam page should treat purchase as a HISTORICAL listing, not a promise of MATCHMAKING.
