Sega’s The Maze of the Kings Reaches Quest 3 Through a Fan VR Build, Not Sega

Sega’s 2002 arcade shooter The Maze of the Kings is now PLAYABLE in VR on Meta QUEST 3, but not through Sega. It arrives via an EXPERIMENTAL update to hotd2-vr, a fan project that began by bringing The House of the Dead 2 into a headset, according to GenerationAmiga.

What the October 9 build does

The latest hotd2-vr release landed on October 9, 2026. It is built on a MODIFIED version of Flycast, the emulator that supports Sega DREAMCAST and NAOMI arcade software. Rather than projecting the game onto a flat virtual screen, the build ADAPTS the original 3D graphics so the environment surrounds the player.

The input change is a natural fit. The original cabinet used a WAND-shaped controller, so the VR version hands players a virtual MAGIC STAFF instead of the light gun used in The House of the Dead 2.

The caveats are real

  • It is NOT an official Sega release or a remake; it runs the ORIGINAL arcade game with changes to presentation, controls and interface.
  • Installation requires SIDELOADING onto a compatible Quest, for example with SideQuest, and more than just an APK install.
  • The developer has tested the game on Quest 3 only. PC VR testing has NOT been completed for this release, and some newer hand and staff settings still need hardware verification.

Why it matters

Arcade preservation projects keep finding a SECOND life in standalone headsets, and hotd2-vr shows that emulation can go beyond a virtual cabinet when the original game already shipped real 3D geometry. The trade-off is FRAGILITY: an experimental, unofficial build carries compatibility and presentation issues, and there is NO sign of an official Sega release tied to the project.
