Analysts Press Meta on Smart Glasses Privacy Ahead of Connect

Two days before Meta Connect, the story around Meta’s smart GLASSES is no longer only about FEATURES. On September 21, Tom’s Guide published a roundup of three wearables ANALYSTS who argue Meta must PROVE its recording SAFEGUARDS — and its REPUTATION — before holiday buyers treat the frames as a gift instead of a LIABILITY.

The piece sits beside a separate rumor TRACK: The Verge, citing The Information, says Meta could show camera-free “Luna” frames at Connect with a possible OCTOBER ship WINDOW. Tom’s Guide’s analysts are not confirming HARDWARE. They are describing why PRIVACY is now a product RISK on the Connect STAGE.

Why Meta Is the Target

Ramon Llamos, a wearables analyst for IDC, told Tom’s Guide that Meta is “treading a fine LINE between those who abuse their glasses and those who do not.” He said recording lights have not proven EFFECTIVE, and that unwanted recording cases have already produced jail time even as harassing VIDEOS continue.

Carolina Milanesi of The Heart of Tech put the spotlight on MARKET SHARE. Meta, she said, made “the most POPULAR glasses,” and a failure to take ACCOUNTABILITY has made trust harder “for everyone else.” Avi Greengart of Techsponential framed a wider BACKLASH against AI-enabled cameras — from law-enforcement systems to faceworn recorders — while noting Ray-Ban Meta SALES have still INCREASED. Momentum into the HOLIDAY season, he warned, depends on buyers feeling delighted rather than HORRIFIED.

What the Analysts Say Meta Must Do

Greengart’s checklist is the sharpest. Meta, he said, must fully EXPLAIN its architecture and ensure glasses cannot RECORD when they are not worn, cannot record without NOTIFICATION, and cannot leave footage viewable by Meta or its CONTRACTORS. Milanesi wants HARDWARE progress — a light that is harder to disable, and solutions such as a physical SHUTTER. Llamos floated audible alerts when recording starts, while warning that loud cues could punish responsible users.

Tom’s Guide also notes Meta’s late-August firmware that STOPS recording if the capture LED is damaged, disabled, or blocked, plus creator bans and hashtag blocks on Instagram. The analysts treat those steps as INCOMPLETE relative to the REPUTATION debt Meta still carries into Connect.

Connect Week Context

Meta Connect is scheduled for September 23–24, 2026. The company has already previewed an agenda that pushes Horizon games toward Facebook and Instagram DISTRIBUTION — a separate SOFTWARE story Metaverse Watcher covered earlier today. Privacy, by contrast, is the HARDWARE trust TEST sitting next to any glasses KEYNOTE.

Greengart’s closing line is the practical one for Metaverse Watcher readers: WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption shows people can trust some Meta properties, but “bad behavior by users and Meta’s own LAPSES” still create REPUTATIONAL debt that has to be tackled head-on. Camera-free SKUs, if they appear, would be one RESPONSE — not a substitute for architecture that survives public SCRUTINY.
