Meta just put a CINEMA BADGE on a pair of glasses. At Connect, the company said META VR GLASSES are the first IMAX ENHANCED certified VR device — a claim Variety, PetaPixel, and Meta’s own newsroom all LED with — and studios NOTICED when the $1,299 headset landed on September 24, 2026.

This is not another FOV hands-on. The story is CONTENT: expanded-aspect IMAX playback at home, DOLBY VISION and DOLBY ATMOS in the frames, and a studio PIPELINE that stretches from Lionsgate 3D catalogs to James Cameron’s Lightstorm Vision “first time in 3D” blockbusters for 2027.
IMAX Enhanced, Built Into the Glasses
Meta’s About page calls the headset the first ever IMAX Enhanced CERTIFIED VR device, and says it will be one of the only ways to watch select films in IMAX’s exclusive expanded aspect ratio at home. PetaPixel notes the design is meant to HOLD IMAX’s distinct tall-and-wide frame — not just upscale a flat TV stream into a floating panel.
The hardware behind that claim is a 5K Infinite Display on micro-OLED panels, paired with ultra-compact pancake lenses Meta says were built for cinema-grade clarity in a glasses silhouette. Official weight: about 100 GRAMS. Retail PRICE: $1,299.99. Compute and battery live in a tethered puck with up to three hours of high-resolution media playback. Shipping window: SPRING 2027.

Studio 3D Library: Lionsgate, Cameron, Streamers
Variety’s Corbin Bolies report is the cleanest MAP of the film DEALS. Meta promises 3D titles from Lionsgate, plus a partnership with James Cameron and Lightstorm Vision to develop “first time in 3D” blockbusters for next year. Peacock, HBO Max, and Paramount+ are opening their 3D CATALOGS on the platform for the first time.
Disney sits in the same stack. Disney+ subscribers in select countries can start streaming 3D versions of titles such as The Avengers and Black Panther in November, with themed viewing environments. VR-enhanced cuts of Avengers: Infinity War and Star Wars: A New Hope arrive later inside Disney Immersive Cinema — a separate ILM-led lane we covered earlier today; the point here is the broader CERTIFICATION and multi-studio shelf, not that app’s effects pipeline.

What “Cinema Device” Actually Means
GamesBeat’s Dean Takahashi recap frames the PITCH the way Meta wants buyers to hear it: personal cinema first, then sports, workspace, and console. Dolby Vision for color and contrast. Dolby Atmos spatial audio built into the frames. A media partner list that already includes Prime Video, YouTube, DIRECTV, AMC+, Crunchyroll, Plex, Tubi, and more — with Meta saying thousands of titles should be available internationally by launch.
That library is the strategic BET. Hardware reviews will argue FOV and passthrough. Studios will argue whether IMAX Enhanced at home plus first-wave 3D catalogs are enough to JUSTIFY a $1,299 glasses + puck kit when Quest 3 still owns the installed base. Meta is clearly trying to OWN the premium living-room seat before Apple Vision Pro and other spatial displays redefine it again.

Why This Matters Now
IMAX Enhanced is a STANDARDS play as much as a marketing line. If Meta can keep Lionsgate, Lightstorm Vision, and the major streamers feeding 3D and expanded-ratio masters into the same device, the glasses become a distribution endpoint — not just another Quest sibling with a thinner faceplate.
Spring 2027 is still MONTHS away. Between now and then, watch three SIGNALS: how many IMAX Enhanced titles actually SHIP day one, whether Cameron’s “first time in 3D” slate stays on the calendar, and whether Peacock / HBO Max / Paramount+ 3D catalogs arrive as full libraries or thin showcases. Until those land, the certification is a PROMISE — a LOUD one.
