PCWorld: Meta VR Glasses Forgot About the Games — Connect Pitch Skips New Titles

PCWorld (Michael Crider, September 29, 2026) says Meta’s new flagship VR GLASSES reveal almost FORGOT the thing that made Quest MATTER: GAMES. The Connect TRAILER, Crider notes, does not mention gaming at all — and the keynote’s main DEMO was a hands-only run of BEAT SABER, a 2019 title, on a $1,299.99 headset due in spring 2027.

What Crider Saw (and Did Not See)

Crider’s core COMPLAINT is POSITIONING. Meta PITCHED cinema, live sports, virtual workspaces, and holographic calling hard. Gaming got a short REASSURANCE from Meta’s CTO after less than thirty seconds of Beat Saber — “VR gaming is alive and well on Meta VR Glasses” — which Crider likens to an octogenarian senator being declared in “excellent health.” The talk also leaned on XBOX CLOUD STREAMING before moving on to movies, a pattern he compares to Google’s GeForce Now mentions for Chromebooks.

Hardware details that do land in the piece: glasses-style form factor, no rear headband, eye TRACKING, pancake optics with OLED panels, a tethered PUCK that keeps face weight near 100 GRAMS, and a price under half of Vision Pro. Controllers are not clearly BUNDLED in the base SKU; Meta is pushing hand TRACKING as the default INPUT. Crider calls the comfort leap REAL — and still asks why a company that popularized modern VR gaming barely sold new games from the STAGE.

Context Crider Adds — Cuts, Horizon, and Valve

The column places the headset inside a longer RETREAT narrative: Reality Labs job CUTS earlier in 2026, reduced FUNDING for Quest studios behind titles such as Rock Band VR and Resident Evil 4 VR, and Horizon Worlds never becoming the mass PLATFORM Meta once promised. Crider estimates Meta has lost “the better part of a hundred billion dollars” on VR and the metaverse push — and notes the stock ROSE when those cuts landed. Parallel to that, he argues Valve’s STEAM FRAME is picking up the gaming TORCH while also shipping with HALF-LIFE: ALYX, a six-year-old SHOWPIECE, at $1,059–$1,299 — not a clean contrast, just a thinner one.

What Meta Listed Off-Stage

Crider is writing about the keynote EMPHASIS, not claiming a zero-game CATALOG. Separately, Meta and outlets including UploadVR listed hands-first titles and UPDATES for spring 2027 — Beat Saber: Flux, Ace Attorney Dual Destinies VR, Tetris Effect: Mixed Realities, Two Point Hospital VR, Dragon Grove, Story of Seasons, Cardmada, Dice Throne Digital — plus Quest catalog COMPATIBILITY. Metaverse Watcher has already covered several of those announces on their own. PCWorld’s September 29 point is narrower: if Meta still wants to be the public ENGINE of VR GAMING, the Connect stage did not act like it.

Why It Matters

Crider’s closing worry is market INERTIA. Meta’s money and reach still MOVE VR into public view more than Valve can alone. If the company’s energy shifts to AI wearables and media glasses while new VR games get a thirty-second NOD, the category that Quest built may SHRINK for everyone — including Steam Frame buyers waiting on fresh showpieces. Treat the column as a sourced CRITIQUE of Connect messaging, not a hardware teardown: the glasses look light and capable; the question is whether Meta still wants to fill them with new PLAY.
