Valve Drops the 1440p Floor From Steam Frame Playable. Steamworks Still Flags Sub-1440 Unsupported.

Valve REMOVED the resolution floor from Steam Frame’s PLAYABLE badge in SteamOS 0.3.0 — then left a CONTRADICTING line in Steamworks.

MIXED (Chris Steven, September 21) reports that the SteamOS 0.3.0 RELEASE notes carry a single developer-facing line: “Change Playable performance criteria to ALLOW any resolution (was: 1440p).” GamingOnLinux published the same notes on September 18. That CHANGE sits in the DEVELOPER section of the headset’s FIRST public system update — alongside Vulkan and Mesa work — not in the charging or microphone fixes we covered earlier.

What Playable Actually Promises

On Valve’s Steam Frame Standalone Compatibility page, PLAYABLE means a game “functions on Frame, but may REQUIRE manual work from the user” — a community CONTROLLER config, an on-screen keyboard, or an in-game settings tweak. VERIFIED means the title passes all checks. UNSUPPORTED means it does not function on Frame due to Proton or hardware incompatibility. UNKNOWN means the review has not happened.

VERIFIED still has HARD numbers. The same Steamworks checklist says a VR title “must run at a minimum of 72 fps at 1728×1728 during normal play,” and a 2D title at 30 fps at 1280×720. Valve notes that MOST failures in that PERFORMANCE section leave a game with a PLAYABLE badge instead. Valve has NEVER published a framerate TARGET for Playable itself; the 1440p line in the release note was the ONLY public resolution tied to that middle rung.

Steamworks Still Says Sub-1440 Is Unsupported

Here is the UNRESOLVED conflict. MIXED checked the Steamworks page on September 21 and found it STILL states that “VR games below 1440×1440 will appear with an Unsupported badge.” We VERIFIED the same sentence on Valve’s live COMPATIBILITY doc today. The release note DROPS the 1440p floor from Playable CRITERIA; the checklist still TIES VR titles below 1440×1440 to Unsupported. Valve has published NO note explaining which rule a review follows now, and no before-and-after count of how many titles move rung.

Everything else on the checklist — controller models, glyphs, launchers, device warnings — reads the same either way. Only the RESOLUTION cutoff sits in TENSION with SteamOS 0.3.0.

Badges Cover Standalone Only

Valve is EXPLICIT that the review “only applies for games (both 2D and VR) running LOCALLY on Steam Frame, not games running on a PC streamed to Frame.” A title marked Unsupported can STILL run over Steam Link from a gaming PC. The results “will not affect whether your game is AVAILABLE to customers on Frame, but will affect how it is presented” — a badge on the store and library, not a GATE.

Counting the EFFECT is the hard part. Steam listed 143 Steam Frame VERIFIED games as of September 18 — only 63 of them VR, per our prior catalog count. Valve publishes NO equivalent figure for Playable, so the size of this SHIFT will only show as store pages are retested. Our earlier SteamOS 0.3.0 coverage focused on charging and the microphone FIX; today’s STORY is the Playable criteria CHANGE and the checklist CONTRADICTION that remains LIVE.
