Unity just taught CODING AGENTS how the ENGINE actually works — and left HEADSET work OFF the skill list.
MIXED (Shane S. Ellison, September 20) flags a gap that matters for anyone shipping to Quest, Steam Frame, or Vision Pro: Unity’s new first-party agent PLUGINS cover the Editor properly, and still ship ZERO XR, VR, or OpenXR SKILLS.

What Unity Actually Shipped
On September 16, Unity published the official plugin for OpenAI’s Codex, carrying 31 ENGINE SKILLS written by Unity engineers. A week earlier, on September 9, the company shipped the official plugin for Claude Code with 29 skills. Both target Unity 6 and newer.
Unity’s own pitch is blunt: general-purpose AGENTS scrape forum posts and tutorials written for ENGINE versions that no longer ship. “The answer that surfaces is the one that gets repeated most often, rather than the one that is still true today.” The result COMPILES and still does the wrong thing — a hand-authored sprite ATLAS, a URP RENDERER feature that never RUNS, a menu transition declared on the wrong STATE.

Skills Cover the Engine, Not the Platform
Both plugin packs span the same nine areas: getting started and tooling, UI and text, 2D and sprites, graphics and rendering, audio, scene and gameplay, monetisation and live ops, multiplayer, and platform and localisation. One SKILL sets up a fresh PROJECT with the Editor, source control, and packages. Another plans a move from the Built-in Render Pipeline to URP.
The Claude Code plugin goes further on EDITOR CONTROL. Unity bundles its CLI and MCP SERVER so the agent can CREATE and MODIFY GameObjects, edit scenes and assets, inspect the hierarchy, and run C# inside the project — not just emit advice.

The XR Gap MIXED Called Out
For this audience, that is the HOLE. Neither the 31 nor the 29 includes an XR, VR, or OpenXR skill. A developer building for Quest, Steam Frame, or Vision Pro gets an agent that knows Unity’s rendering, UI, audio, and multiplayer systems properly — and knows NOTHING more about XR RIGS, INTERACTION toolkits, or STORE SUBMISSION than it did last month.
Unity says more skills are coming to both PLUGINS. Whether any of them are XR SKILLS is the open question for anyone whose game only runs on a HEADSET.
Why Unity Bothered
Unity cites Stack Overflow’s 2025 Developer Survey: 66% named “AI solutions that are almost right, but not quite” as their top frustration, and 45% said DEBUGGING AI-generated code is more time-consuming. The company claims a skill produces fewer ERRORS, uses TOKENS more efficiently, and finishes in fewer TURNS — without publishing a BENCHMARK.
Installation is short: one click from the OpenAI plugin directory or two TERMINAL commands for Codex; terminal or Claude Desktop for Claude Code. No per-project setup. The plugin is published by Unity Technologies under the Unity Companion License and listed under Unity’s own name in both directories. Source for the agent plugin lives on GitHub.
