Steam Frame Hits 5.49% in October Steam Survey

Steam Frame has taken FIFTH place among VR headsets counted on Steam. Valve’s October 2026 Hardware & Software Survey now lists the headset at 5.49% of surveyed VR headsets, up 4.94 POINTS from the restated September row. That is Frame’s first full calendar month in the table after public sales began in mid-September, and it already sits ahead of Pico 4 and more than double Sony’s PlayStation VR2.

MetaverseWatcher tracked Frame’s first survey line when September was revised to a thin early reading; see Steam Frame’s first Steam Survey line. October is the first month that can support a trend, and the jump into the TOP FIVE is the clearest demand signal Valve has published since the reservation queue opened.

What the October table shows

Figures below are taken from Valve’s live October 2026 survey page as of November 5, 2026 (America/New_York). Percentages are share of Steam accounts that reported a VR headset in the survey sample, not units shipped worldwide.

Headset Share Month change
Meta Quest 3 27.27% +0.36
Oculus Quest 2 22.23% −3.57
Meta Quest 3S 11.04% −0.04
Valve Index 9.90% −0.93
Valve Steam Frame 5.49% +4.94
Pico 4 4.50% −0.26
Oculus Rift S 3.26% −0.14
Sony PlayStation VR2 2.41% +0.10
HTC Vive 2.00% −0.26
Windows Mixed Reality 1.86% n/a

Overall VR ownership on Steam also ticked up: 1.75% of surveyed Steam users reported a VR headset, up 0.40 points from September. Multiplying Frame’s 5.49% headset share by that 1.75% base puts Frame at roughly 0.1% of all surveyed Steam accounts—about one machine in a thousand. That is still rare in absolute terms, but it is a sharp climb from a partial September launch window.

Why fifth place matters this early

Frame remains supply-constrained. Valve still routes buyers through a reservation queue, with many holders told to expect a December 2026 window or a 2027 slot; our reservation window breakdown and order wait guide cover how to read those labels. Hitting fifth place while shipments are rationed is stronger evidence of use among people who already have a unit than of a finished rollout.

For comparison, Road to VR notes that the Valve Index posted about 1.46% in its first Steam survey month after the 2019 launch. Frame’s 5.49% first full-month reading is several times that early Index mark, even before most reservation holders have been invited to buy. The Index later climbed for years and still holds fourth place at 9.90% despite being out of production.

Quest 2’s 3.57-point drop is the largest single move in the October table and may include some upgrades into Frame, Quest 3, or other headsets. Meta has already set an end-of-support path for Quest 2 and Quest Pro through late 2027, which adds another reason older units leave the active Steam sample. Quest 3 remains first at 27.27%, and the Quest 3 / Quest 2 / Quest 3S trio still accounts for roughly 60% of Steam VR headsets.

How to read the number—and its limits

Valve describes the survey as optional and anonymous. Since March 2020 it has based headset detection on SteamVR records from the preceding month rather than only headsets plugged in at the moment of the survey prompt. That method is fairer for intermittent use, but Valve does not publish how standalone-only Frame sessions are counted when no PC is involved. Treat 5.49% as a Steam-connected usage share, not a global sales total.

Early October copies of the table briefly showed a lower Frame row near 4.13% with a larger “Other” bucket before Valve’s reclassification lifted named rows, including Frame, into the live 5.49% figure. Survey tables on Steam often restated after first publish; the live page is the authoritative snapshot for this report.

Software context still matters for what those headsets do. Our Steam Frame reviews roundup and best Steam Frame games list show a headset that lands as a strong SteamOS VR device with a thin native library and heavy reliance on streaming or PC VR. Valve’s own recent comments, covered in Valve still believes in VR, framed the familiar content-and-audience loop even as Frame began to appear in survey data.

What to watch in November

The next survey will show whether Frame holds fifth place once the October revision dust settles and whether Quest 2’s share keeps falling. If reservation emails accelerate into the December cohort, the November table should climb again; if 2027 windows dominate, growth may flatten even with strong per-unit engagement. For buyers still waiting, the October reading is useful context—not a promise of faster shipping.
