Fallout: Factions Brings Tabletop Wasteland to Xreal Aura

Fallout: Factions on Xreal Aura is shaping up as one of the more distinctive games for Google’s new Android XR glasses. Developed by Mirrorscape as a digital adaptation of Modiphius Entertainment’s Fallout: Factions miniatures game, it places a turn-based Nuka-World skirmish directly on a player’s physical table, with hand tracking used to move pieces, measure distances and roll dice. With Aura’s first US shipments expected in mid-November, the game is one of the clearest early examples of what optical see-through glasses can do that a fully enclosed VR headset cannot.

What Fallout: Factions is

This is not a new mainline Fallout role-playing game. Fallout: Factions is a two-player, turn-based player-versus-player tactics game built on Modiphius’ tabletop rules. According to Mirrorscape’s official game site, players choose one of three factions and battle for control of the ruins of Nuka-World:

  • The Operators, who rely on precision fire and accuracy.
  • The Pack, close-range brawlers who win with strength and speed.
  • The Disciples, who are dangerous both up close and at range.

Combat mixes positioning with dice. Mirrorscape says each attack combines Standard, Luck and Bonus Dice to represent weapon power, crew skill and chance. Players can view the battlefield from above, like a traditional tabletop game, or drop to a crew member’s point of view.

How it uses Xreal Aura

In its June 24 announcement naming the game an Aura launch title, Mirrorscape said the game uses Aura’s optical see-through displays and hand tracking so players can “command their factions, measure distances, and roll digital dice in real-time” over their own tabletop. Because Aura’s lenses are transparent, players see the room, and each other, with their own eyes rather than through camera passthrough.

“Bringing Fallout: Factions to the XREAL AURA represents a realization of the authentic immersive tabletop gaming experience we’ve been building towards,” Mirrorscape CEO Grant Anderson said in that announcement. Xreal’s own announcement said players can compete with friends “locally or globally,” meaning both across the same table and online.

Google also named Fallout: Factions among the experiences coming to Aura in its October 28 launch announcement for the glasses, alongside other titles such as Owlchemy Labs’ Hyper Visor, which we covered in our report on Aura’s $1.99 launch title.

Price, release date and a Steam version

Mirrorscape has not yet published a price or an exact store release date for Fallout: Factions. Its site says the game is “Available on Android XR” and lists a Steam version as coming soon, without a date or details on whether that version will support VR or headsets such as Valve’s Steam Frame. Buyers should confirm the store listing and device requirements before purchasing.

Why it matters

Tabletop games are a natural fit for glasses that keep the real world in view: the shared table, the opponent’s face and the social side of play all stay intact. A licensed Fallout title gives Android XR a recognizable name at launch, though the real test will be price and how well hand tracking handles precise piece movement once Aura reaches buyers.
