Apple Vision Pro is still the most technically ambitious headset you can buy, and in late 2026 it is also the most expensive mainstream one by a wide margin. The current model, the M5 version Apple introduced on October 15, 2025, now starts at $3,699 in the U.S. This guide covers what it costs, what is inside, what visionOS 27 adds, how it compares with cheaper rivals, and who should actually buy one.
Apple Vision Pro price in 2026
Apple sells three storage tiers. As of today, Apple’s U.S. store lists:
- 256GB: $3,699
- 512GB: $3,899
- 1TB: $4,199
That is $200 more than the $3,499 launch price. Apple raised all three tiers in June 2026, and AppleInsider attributes the increase to memory shortages driven by AI demand. Prescription lens inserts (ZEISS Optical Inserts) and extra bands are sold separately. The box includes the Light Seal, two Light Seal cushions, the Dual Knit Band, the external battery, a cover, a polishing cloth and a 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with a USB-C cable, according to Apple’s spec sheet.

Apple Vision Pro specs (M5 model)
The key specifications, from Apple’s official tech specs page:
| Chips | Apple M5 (10-core CPU, 10-core GPU with hardware ray tracing, 16-core Neural Engine, 16GB unified memory) plus the R1 sensor chip |
| Displays | Micro-OLED, 23 million pixels total, 7.5-micron pixel pitch, 92% DCI-P3 |
| Refresh rates | 90Hz, 96Hz, 100Hz and 120Hz |
| Passthrough latency | 12 milliseconds photon-to-photon (R1) |
| Sensors | Two main cameras, six world-facing tracking cameras, four eye-tracking cameras, TrueDepth camera, LiDAR, four IMUs |
| Input | Eyes, hands and voice; keyboards, trackpads, mice, game controllers, Logitech Muse and PS VR2 Sense controllers |
| Battery | External pack (353g): up to 2.5 hours general use, up to 3 hours video; usable while charging |
| Weight | 750–800g with Light Seal and Dual Knit Band |
| IPD range | 51–75mm |
| Wireless | Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3 |
Compared with the original 2024 model, Apple says the M5 version renders about 10 percent more pixels on the same panels, can run at up to 120Hz, and gets roughly 30 more minutes of general use per charge. The Dual Knit Band, which adds a top strap to the knit rear band, is the main comfort upgrade.
What visionOS 27 adds
visionOS 27 shipped on September 14, 2026 for both the M2 and M5 models. As 9to5Mac summarized, the headline features are:
- The new Siri AI and a standalone Siri app for voice-first computing
- Visual Intelligence, which lets you ask Siri about whatever you are looking at
- Curved windows, extra-small widgets and a redesigned Control Center
- Panoramas turned into spatial scenes that can be used as Environments, plus a new Thórsmörk Environment
- Higher-quality screen recording and wheelchair control as a new accessibility option
If you already own a 2024 Vision Pro, you get every one of these features without buying new hardware. That makes the upgrade case for M2 owners thin, a point AppleInsider also makes in its one-year review.
Apps, games and entertainment
Vision Pro’s strongest uses remain media and productivity. It plays 3D movies from the Apple TV app, Apple Immersive Video (including some live NBA and MLB games in immersive format), and spatial photos and videos you capture yourself. Mac Virtual Display turns a Mac into a large, high-refresh virtual screen, and most iPad apps run in compatibility mode.
The weak spot is native software. AppleInsider’s October 22 review describes app development as stagnant and gaming as having “barely budged in a year,” with Apple Arcade carrying most native games and recent layoffs touching Apple’s Vision Pro gaming and immersive video teams. Community projects keep appearing, such as the Super Mario 64 tabletop diorama port we covered last week, but there is no large native game library comparable to Quest’s. PC VR streaming through third-party apps is the usual workaround for gamers.
Vision Pro vs. Galaxy XR, Steam Frame and Quest 3
- Samsung Galaxy XR ($1,799.99): the closest conceptual rival, running Google’s Android XR with a similar eye-and-hand interface at less than half the price. See our Android XR explainer.
- Valve Steam Frame (from $1,059): built first for wireless PC VR and SteamOS. It is the better choice if your goal is games. Our Steam Frame vs Quest 3 guide breaks down that decision.
- Meta Quest 3 ($599.99) and Quest 3S ($349.99): far cheaper, controller-friendly, and backed by the largest standalone VR game catalog.
Vision Pro wins on display sharpness, passthrough quality, eye tracking and integration with iPhone, iPad and Mac. It loses on price, weight and games. For the full field, see our best VR headsets of 2026 roundup.
Who should buy Apple Vision Pro?
- Buy it if you live in Apple’s ecosystem, want a private large-screen workspace for a Mac, watch a lot of 3D or immersive video, or are a developer or business building for visionOS.
- Skip it if your main goal is gaming, if you are price sensitive, or if you already own the 2024 model and are happy with it.
- Wait if you want a lighter, cheaper Apple headset. Reports cited by AppleInsider point to next-generation hardware around 2028 or early 2029, but Apple has not announced anything, so treat that timing as unconfirmed.
Before buying, book an in-store demo at an Apple Store, which also helps you find the right Light Seal fit and see whether you need optical inserts. Apple says users must be 13 or older.
