Horror is the genre where virtual reality earns its keep. A jump scare on a TV is something you watch; in a headset, the thing is standing beside you and you have to physically turn around to check. With Halloween tomorrow and a wave of seasonal discounts live on Steam, this is our ranked list of the best VR horror games you can buy right now, with the price we verified today, the regular price, and whether a standalone Meta Quest version exists.

We ranked these on three things: how well the game uses VR (presence, physical interaction, sound), how long the scares hold up, and how broadly it is available. We do not run our own lab tests, so where we cite reception we use the public Steam recommendation count and, where one exists, the Metacritic score shown on the Steam page. If you are new to the headset side, start with our best VR headsets of 2026 guide, and if fast movement bothers you, read our VR motion sickness prevention guide before any of the free-locomotion picks below.

Seven of the ten games were discounted on Steam at the time of our check, several by 70%. Sale prices on Steam usually end on a fixed date, so if one of these is on your list, today’s price is the one to compare against during the Black Friday sales on November 27.

1. Alien: Rogue Incursion VR

Survios built the most convincing licensed horror game in VR. You play Zula Hendricks, a character who first appeared in Dark Horse’s Alien comics, and you spend most of the campaign with a motion tracker in one hand and a pulse rifle in the other. The tracker is the star: its pinging is quiet, directional, and constant, and it turns every corridor into a negotiation. It is a full-price, single-player campaign (this release is labeled Part One), released on Steam on December 19, 2024, with a version for Quest 3 and 3S. It is not discounted today, but it is still the first game we would put in front of a new headset owner who wants to be scared.

2. The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners

Skydance Interactive’s 2020 game remains the reference point for physical melee in VR. Walkers grab you, you push them off, and stabbing one through the skull takes real effort because the blade has to be pulled back out. The flooded New Orleans setting, a crafting loop, and choices about which factions to help give it more structure than most horror games. At $9.99 today it is the best value on this list. A sequel, Chapter 2: Retribution, is also available if you finish this one and want more.

3. Phasmophobia

Kinetic Games’ co-op ghost investigation game has more Steam recommendations than every other game on this list combined, by a wide margin: 686,386 at our check. Up to four players gather evidence with EMF readers, thermometers and spirit boxes to identify a ghost, and voice chat matters because the ghost can hear you. VR is optional (Steam lists it as “VR Supported”), which is a strength for groups: one friend can play in a headset while the others play on a monitor. The game has been in Early Access since September 2020 and is $13.99 today. It is the pick for a Halloween night with friends.

4. Propagation: Paradise Hotel

WanadevStudio’s survival horror adventure is the closest thing VR has to a classic Resident Evil structure: a single large building, scarce ammunition, locked doors, and creatures that punish you for wasting shots. It launched on Steam in May 2023 and is on Quest as well. At $5.99, 70% off, it is the cheapest full-length campaign here and our recommendation for anyone who wants a slower, more tense game than the shooters further down.

5. Five Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted 2

Steel Wool Studios’ sequel is a collection of short, escalating mini-games built around the animatronics from the series, and VR suits the format because there is nowhere to look away. It is the most approachable horror game on the list for younger players and for people who prefer short sessions; the scares are jump-scares rather than dread. Parents should still check the age rating and use the tools in our Meta Quest parental controls guide. It is $23.99 on Steam today, down from $39.99.

6. Arizona Sunshine VR 2

Vertigo Games’ zombie shooter leans more toward action than fear, but its gore, close-quarters fights, and dog companion Buddy make it one of the most replayable games here, and it supports co-op. It carries a Metacritic score of 80 on its Steam page and is $11.99 today, 70% off its $39.99 price, which makes it one of the strongest deals of the week.

7. MADiSON VR

BLOODIOUS GAMES rebuilt its psychological horror game MADiSON for VR in May 2024. Its central idea, an instant camera whose photos reveal things that are not otherwise there, works far better when you are physically holding the camera and shaking out the print. This is the most unsettling game on the list in the traditional sense: it relies on atmosphere, a haunted house, and puzzles rather than combat. It is $20.99 on Steam today.

8. Into the Radius 2

CM Immersive’s survival shooter is horror by attrition. You scavenge in an anomalous exclusion zone, manage weapons that jam and gear that wears down, and the fear comes from knowing a single bad decision can cost an hour of progress. Steam lists its full release date as April 23, 2026, and it has 5,387 recommendations. It is a demanding game that rewards patience, and it pairs well with a strong PC; see our guide to playing PC VR games on Quest if you own a Quest and want to stream it from a PC.

9. Silent Slayer: Vault of the Vampire

Schell Games, the studio behind I Expect You To Die, made a horror puzzle game about killing sleeping vampires without waking them. Every tool has to be used quietly and precisely, which turns a simple premise into very tense room-scale puzzles. It is a good choice for players who want fear without fast movement, since it is played largely in place. It is $19.99 on Steam and is also on Quest.

10. Dreadhalls

White Door Games’ dungeon crawler is one of the oldest games here and still one of the most effective. You explore dark corridors with very little light, and the game’s sound design does most of the work. It is short, cheap at $5.99 today, and a useful test of how much horror you can handle in a headset before you commit to a $40 campaign.

Honorable Mention: Half-Life: Alyx

Valve’s game is not a horror game, but several of its chapters are among the scariest sequences in VR, and its Metacritic score of 93 is the highest of any game we checked. It is $59.99 on Steam and requires a PC. It also recently gained foveated rendering support, which we covered in Half-Life: Alyx foveated rendering comes to PC VR headsets.

Which VR Horror Game Should You Buy?

  • Best overall: Alien: Rogue Incursion VR, if you own a Quest 3 or 3S or a PC VR headset.
  • Best value today: The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners at $9.99, or Propagation: Paradise Hotel at $5.99.
  • Best with friends: Phasmophobia, because only one player needs a headset.
  • Best for motion-sensitive players: Silent Slayer and MADiSON VR, which are slower and less dependent on fast movement.
  • Best for younger teens: Five Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted 2, after checking its rating.

How We Built This List

Every price, release date, developer name, review count and Metacritic score in this article comes from each game’s Steam store listing in the US region on October 30, 2026. We did not include games whose current Steam listing we could not confirm. Quest availability is marked “Yes” only where a standalone Quest release is well established; for the others, check the Meta Horizon Store before buying. We will update this list as new horror releases arrive; for this week’s launches, see New VR Games This Week: Oct 26 to Nov 1, 2026, and if you are still choosing a headset, read Quest 3 vs Quest 3S: which Meta headset to buy.
