XR Week in Review: XREAL Aura, Meta’s $4.13B Loss

By the Metaverse Watcher newsroom. Covers October 24–30, 2026. Updated Friday, October 30, 2026.

This was the week smart glasses stopped being a Connect-stage promise and started showing up in checkout carts. Google and XREAL opened orders for the first Android XR glasses, Snap’s Specs got their first real street tests, and three more glasses makers put prices on the table. Meanwhile Meta’s quarterly numbers showed exactly why the industry is pivoting to the face: Quest revenue slid again. Here is everything that mattered in XR this week, with links to our full coverage.

1. XREAL Aura Launches as the First Android XR Glasses

The headline launch of the week. On October 28, Google announced that XREAL Aura, which it calls “the first wired XR glasses powered by Android XR,” is open for orders in the US, Canada and Korea, with Japan following on November 2. Launch pricing starts at $1,099 through the end of the year, and US shipments begin in mid-November via xreal.com and Best Buy. The glasses use transparent lenses with a 70-degree field of view, Gemini built in, and a separate compute puck that holds the processor and battery.

Software is arriving on day one too. PhoneArena reports that Resolution Games released Holochess, a free strategy game, and ported Demeo to the platform. Earlier, Owlchemy’s Hyper Visor was confirmed as a $1.99 launch title. Our full breakdown: XREAL Aura launch: $1,099 price, mid-November shipping.

Samsung is not far behind. Google Play services v26.42 added the plumbing for Android XR glasses to pair with Android phones, and Google declared the Jetpack XR SDK stable, with SceneCore, ARCore and XR Runtime at 1.0. Every confirmed detail on Samsung’s frames is in our Samsung Galaxy Glasses guide.

2. Meta Reality Labs Loses $4.13 Billion as Quest Sales Slide

Meta’s third-quarter results put a hard number on VR’s slowdown. Reality Labs revenue fell 6% year over year to $443 million as Quest sales declined, while the operating loss narrowed to $4.13 billion. The narrative from Menlo Park is clear: glasses and AI, not headsets, are the growth story. That fits the rest of Meta’s week, from the $249 Meta Adventurer (a cheaper version that trades the built-in battery for a plug-in case) to the Meta Muse AI agent’s launch in Japan, its first market outside North America. Full numbers and charts: Meta Reality Labs Q3 2026 results.

3. Snap Specs Meet the Real World

Snap’s $2,195 Specs are due to ship “in the coming weeks,” and this week brought the first serious outside impressions. A New York street test showed navigation, video calls and photo capture working well outdoors, while battery life and indoor viewing lagged. A separate hands-on drained Specs from 92% to under 10% in 45 minutes against a rated four hours. WIRED’s take was blunt: the glasses fit better than they look and stay put during push-ups, but still “feel like a developer prototype in search of a purpose.”

4. The Smart Glasses Price Ladder Fills In

Bar chart of US prices for XR hardware in the news Oct 24 to 30, 2026: Snap Specs $2,195, XREAL Aura $1,099, Valve Steam Frame $1,059, Even G2 Brown 2 $649, Brilliant Labs Halo $399, Ray-Ban Meta Audio $349, Meta Adventurer $249

Put the week’s launches side by side and a clear price ladder appears, from audio-only frames under $350 to full AR displays above $2,000:

  • Brilliant Labs Halo launched at $399 with on-device AI, a color display and Narrative, a real-world game.
  • Even G2 Brown 2 arrived at $649, $50 above the standard G2, alongside $149 polarized sun clips. A same-week 2.4.0 software update added Knowledge Base and Even AI 2.0.
  • Ray-Ban Meta Audio costs $349, weighs 43 grams and runs up to 12 hours, with no camera.
  • Rokid Color brings full-color Micro LED AR to 55-gram glasses at 4,999 yuan in China, shipping April 2027. No US price has been announced.

Upstream, Samsung Display and LG Display are pushing OLEDoS and LEDoS panels for AR glasses as shipments double. For every confirmed date and rumor, keep our upcoming smart glasses tracker for 2026–2027 bookmarked.

5. Steam Frame: A 7/10 Review and a Linux Milestone

Valve’s headset had a mixed but consequential week. WIRED scored the $1,059 Steam Frame 7/10, praising its controllers while flagging short battery life and unreliable wireless adapter pairing. Order windows have also split into December 2026 or 2027, so check yours before planning a holiday purchase.

On the technical side, the headset gained mainline Linux 7.4 kernel support, a meaningful step for an open, SteamOS-based device. And Valve shipped eye-tracked foveated rendering for Half-Life: Alyx on all SteamVR headsets, with eye tracking supported across 13 headset families.

6. Regulation and Privacy: South Korea Gets Tough

Ahead of the November 19 college entrance exam, South Korea said students caught cheating with smart glasses could face criminal charges and a disqualification period of up to three years, with inspectors at all 1,312 test sites. It is the strongest exam rule for smart glasses we have seen, and it lands as eye-tracking glasses from Rokid and Alibaba raise new questions. Our analysis explains what gaze data reveals and what buyers should ask first.
