Bigscreen Beyond 3DoF Mode Works Without Base Stations

Bigscreen has shipped one of the most requested features for its ultralight PC VR headsets: a way to use them with no base stations at all. In an October 27 announcement, the company said a new 3DoF Mode lets owners of every Bigscreen Beyond headset use the display for flat games, video and their Windows desktop without SteamVR or Lighthouse tracking. It is available now in the Bigscreen Beyond Utility for NVIDIA users, with AMD support listed as “coming soon.”

The timing matters. Ten days earlier, Bigscreen’s own buyer’s guide had called a base station mandatory for room-scale use, and Valve had just ended Index production. We covered that tension in HTC Tells Bigscreen SteamVR Base Station Exit Is Unlikely. 3DoF Mode does not change the requirement for full VR, but it gives Beyond a second job that needs no external hardware.

What 3DoF Mode Does

“DoF” means degrees of freedom. A full VR session uses six: head rotation plus position in the room, which on Beyond comes from Lighthouse base stations. 3DoF tracks only rotation (turning, looking up and down, and tilting) using the headset’s built-in inertial sensors. Bigscreen pitches three uses for that:

  • A lighter virtual desktop. Bigscreen says the mode uses fewer system resources than running a desktop inside SteamVR.
  • No controllers. The screen is positioned and adjusted with head gaze, meaning where your head points. Eye tracking is not required.
  • Travel. The Beyond 2 headset weighs 107 grams, and the Link Box can plug into a laptop with two USB-A ports and a DisplayPort 1.4 output. A USB-C port with DisplayPort Alt Mode also works, but only if that port is wired to the laptop’s discrete GPU.

The company’s favorite example is sim racing in games that lack VR support: curve the screen around you for what Bigscreen describes as a bezel-free triple-monitor setup in far less desk space.

The Limits Bigscreen Lists

Bigscreen is unusually direct about what the feature cannot do. Buyers should read these before treating Beyond as a portable display:

Question3DoF Mode answer (per Bigscreen)
Base stations or SteamVR needed?No
Room-scale or 6DoF VR games? No. Positional tracking still requires base stations
3D or stereoscopic video? No. Flat content only
Extra virtual monitors? No. You get as many screens as are physically connected to the PC
Image drift?Yes, over long or active sessions, varying by unit. Recenter from the menu bar
How is the screen adjusted?Head gaze only
GPU supportNVIDIA now; AMD “coming soon”
Which headsets?All Bigscreen Beyond headsets

The “no virtual displays” line is the important one for productivity buyers. Smart glasses such as XREAL’s and Viture’s, and headsets like Vision Pro and Galaxy XR, can spawn extra windows. Beyond in 3DoF Mode mirrors only the monitors your PC already has, so it is closer to wearing a private, very large monitor than a spatial workspace. How to Turn It On

  1. Update and open the Bigscreen Beyond Utility on a PC with an NVIDIA graphics card.
  2. Click the small monitor icon at the bottom of the utility window.
  3. Turn on 3DoF Mode. If the image wanders during a long session, recenter it from the menu bar.

What It Means for Buyers

For existing owners this is a free upgrade with real utility, especially on a laptop or in a seated racing or flight rig. For prospective buyers, the cost math for full VR is unchanged. On October 30, the Bigscreen store’s product data listed Beyond 2 from $899 and Beyond 2e (with eye tracking) from $1,099, and neither price includes tracking or controllers. When we checked HTC’s US store on October 18, a single SteamVR Base Station 2.0 was $229. Valve’s Index, the main source of Lighthouse controllers, is being sold off, as we reported in Valve Index production has ended.

That makes 3DoF Mode a sensible way to get value from the headset on days you are not playing room-scale VR, not a replacement for tracking. Anyone weighing Beyond against an all-in-one option such as Steam Frame, which tracks itself with cameras, should start with our best VR headsets of 2026 comparison. Beyond 2e owners chasing performance can also pair it with Valve’s new desktop foveated rendering, covered in Half-Life: Alyx foveated rendering comes to PC.

Bigscreen has been adding features steadily since launch, including dynamic foveated rendering and improved eye tracking in beta on Beyond 2e, plus accessories such as a light seal and the upcoming Halo Mount (our earlier report). The open question is AMD timing, which Bigscreen has not dated. MIXED reported the feature while it was still in development.
