Meta has started pushing software v28 to its Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses, according to Android Mobiles. The hardware is UNCHANGED. The update is about making the glasses more USEFUL on the move, and its headline feature is HANDS-FREE walking directions.
Navigation by voice, audio only
Wearers can now say something like “Hey Meta, navigate to Piccadilly Circus” and get STEP-BY-STEP guidance through AUDIO cues. The report says the feature works in the UNITED STATES, Puerto Rico, Canada and a growing list of global cities, a CLEAR expansion from the limited pilot zones of earlier releases. Meta also added a SHARE-from-phone shortcut: find a destination in a maps app, tap share, choose “Meta AI,” and the route is sent to the glasses.
Because these glasses have NO display, the directions are spoken, not drawn. That keeps the feature practical for a walk, but it is a DIFFERENT experience from turn arrows on a screen.
Spatial Audio and Mandarin
A new SPATIAL AUDIO mode aims to make music, podcasts and other stereo content feel more immersive. According to the report, it is toggled under Settings, Audio, Spatial, and it works on SECOND-generation Ray-Ban Meta frames and the broader Meta glasses line.
Meta is also adding MANDARIN Chinese (zh_CN) support across device controls, calls, messaging, media capture, music playback, the Meta AI assistant and newer AI features. That is a meaningful widening of the LANGUAGE footprint for a product that has leaned heavily on voice.
What to watch
The report does not give a FULL rollout schedule, and firmware updates of this kind typically arrive in STAGES, so not every owner will see v28 at once. The bigger point is strategic: Meta keeps adding EVERYDAY utility through software alone, which raises the bar for rivals such as Samsung’s display-free Android XR glasses, now expected in NOVEMBER.
