Google’s Android XR Engine Hub promises a FASTER loop for game developers: TEST a scene against LIVE sensor data from a headset WITHOUT rebuilding and sideloading an APK each time. Google’s own setup guides, however, show the feature, called Direct Preview, comes with a FIXED list of REQUIREMENTS that studios should CHECK before they plan around it.
What Direct Preview does
According to Google’s Unreal Engine guide, the HOST machine renders and debugs the content, streams the viewport to a PHYSICAL Android XR device, and streams supported OpenXR extensions BACK to the editor in REAL TIME. Google’s May 19 engine post describes the Engine Hub as “mission control” that unifies the workflow across UNITY, UNREAL and GODOT, and says it is currently available for WINDOWS only.
The version floor
- Unreal Engine: 5.6.1 or higher, per the Unreal guide.
- Godot: 4.6.2 or higher, with the Godot OpenXR Vendors Plugin and the “AndroidXR Streaming Runtime” selected in Editor Settings, per the Godot guide.
- Unity: Unity 6 version 6000.3.5f2 or higher, plus Android XR Extensions for Unity 1.2.0 or later, per the Unity guide.
All three guides REQUIRE a USB-C CONNECTION to the device, with developer options and debugging ENABLED so the host can send ADB commands. Each device must also be configured ONCE inside the Engine Hub BEFORE Direct Preview starts from the engine. In Unreal, Google SPECIFICALLY says to use “Play level in VR,” NOT the usual Play in Editor option.
Where it applies
The guides list XR HEADSETS as the applicable device class. Google’s Developer Preview 4 announcement, which introduced OFFICIAL Unreal and Godot support, also RENAMED its eyewear tiers: “AI glasses” are now AUDIO glasses and “display AI glasses” are now DISPLAY glasses. Engine-based development targets headsets and wired XR glasses, while lighter eyewear remains a Jetpack XR and Android Studio job.
The takeaway
For studios already on CURRENT engine builds, Direct Preview REMOVES a SLOW build-and-deploy step. For teams on MAC, on OLDER Unreal 5.5 projects, or on Godot 4.5, the tool is NOT yet an option, and the UPGRADE COST belongs in the SCHEDULE before Samsung Galaxy XR and Project Aura development ramps up.
