FORVIA HELLA Backs Distance Technologies for a Mirrorless 3D AR Windshield HUD

FORVIA HELLA and Finnish startup Distance Technologies announced a strategic development partnership on September 9, backed by an investment through HELLA Ventures. The target is a mirrorless 3D AR head-up display that treats the windshield as a depth canvas rather than a bounce surface for a 2D graphic.

Conventional automotive HUDs still lean on integrated mirrors to fold an image onto the glass. That optics package is why the modules stay bulky. Distance’s contribution is AI-based computational optics and 3D light-field software; FORVIA HELLA brings vehicle electronics, lighting optics, and the industrialization muscle to take a cockpit module from lab to line. The press framing is blunt: real and virtual content should read as one consistent image, without the glance tax of a floating 2D strip.

What the windshield is supposed to do

Per the joint release, the 3D AR canvas is meant to pin dynamic navigation, lane guidance, exit callouts, and hazard markers onto the roadway itself. Software updates can reshape what OEMs put on that canvas. Depth projection also opens passenger-side entertainment and video comms — and, in highly automated driving scenarios, driver-facing content that only makes sense when hands are off the wheel.

Andreas Lütkes, on FORVIA HELLA’s Electronics executive board, cast the package as a space-optimized cockpit bet: project relevant information “spatially and precisely” without fatiguing the driver. Distance co-founder and CEO Urho Konttori went further, saying the HELLA Ventures investment is meant to move the stack “from merely displaying information to introducing visual intelligence into the physical world.”

How far from a shipping car

The official release does not name a production year or a price. Separate reporting from the Detroit Free Press quotes the partners as shopping the system to automakers with a goal of production vehicles in roughly three years, and describes a flat, mirrorless projector that collapses the deep mirror tunnel of today’s HUDs. Those claims sit outside the joint press PDF — treat them as executive color, not a locked SOP.

For XR readers, the interesting part is not another “AR windshield” headline. It is a Tier-1 supplier putting Ventures cash and industrialization next to a light-field startup that already sells dual-use HUD stories into defense and concept cars. If the mirror stack really leaves the dashboard, automotive AR stops competing with passenger-cabin real estate and starts competing on software depth. That is the same fight smart glasses and passthrough headsets are having — just bolted to a $40,000 windshield.
